From someone with experience, how "user-friendly" is loading for a 300 whisper with bullets in the 180-200 grain range?

Very easy once the brass is formed. I start with loaded rounds from Corbon, shoot them, and reload from there. It just saves a step of forming the brass from a 223 Rem or 221 fireball round, and they are just about as accurate as my handloads. Sierra has published reloading data.

Super or Subsonic? What twist is your barrel, is it a 300 Whisper, or a 300-221?

My barrel is a SS T/C Custom 24" bull marked 300 whisper but it is a 1-10 not 1-8.

and I am only interested in sub sonic.....

Eskimo, the toughest part of 300 whisper reloading for me is keeping subsonic. I shoot a 18" Hart barreled 1 in 8 twist. I found Hornady 220 gr RN over 9.2 gr of AA 2400 to be accurate and keep right at 1000 fps @ 50d. I would think it would be tough to load a lighter (180 gr) bullet down enough in a 24" Barrel. Be careful loading the subsonic rounds in the 1/10 twist barrel and using a suppressor. That twist rate is not recommended by most suppressor manufacturers because the 180-240 grain bullets don't stabillize and could result in a baffle strike, and ruin the suppressor. Most recommend a 1/8 twist.

Most AR-15 barrels are 1/7 twists, to stabalize the big subsonic projos. Besides buying ammo from Corbon, you can buy brass formed from once fired GI .223 brass from SSK, cleaned, deprimed, and primer pockets swaged. If you're shooting an AR-15, you'll also have to deal with the gas system. Martytw and I came up with a solution to this, the .30 HRT. BTW, try the 240 grain Sierra Matchkings for subsonic loads.
