Large Rifle Primers vs Mag primers
I normally use LR Mag primers in my 300 Win Mag. I saw some loads that called for regular large rifle primers. How much difference between the two primers. I know the Mag primers have a hotter ignition but would the regular rifle primers work as well?

Please advise

as well? I would be cautious if switching from regular to mag primers if I was at a maximun load.
i will switch sometime with slower powders to a mag primer. it will change the pressure curve and tweek out a little more velosity and accuracy will also be affected.

In my situation, I would be switching from Mag primers to regular rifle primers using the same powder and amount. I have a ton of regular primers I want to use up.

Saeed did primer tests that deal with this question, among others. See his results at:

Thanks for the thread! Appears you lose a little velocity when using the standard primers over a mag primer.

I have shot the .300 Winny for 30 years and the Fed 210M primer is all I will use. When I go to the Fed 215M primer I blow my group from one holers to one inch. wave Good shooting.

My reloading manual says they used regular LR primers for the 300WM, NOT magnum primers.

Based on a recent article in one of my gun rags, it's more than just an issue of mangnum primer or not; the brand of primer makes a difference. According to that article some standard primers are "hotter" than a magnum primer of a different brand. Sorry about lack of specifics, as I was maginally interested. I tend to use one brand, CCI, because of availability and results.
