350 Remington Magnum

I was looking at last months Guns and Ammo and it had an article about the new model 673 in 350 Rem. In it the author lists a load of 61 grains of Winchester 748 giving 2790 fps with a 225 grain bullet. Is this possible in a 22 in barrel. I have an older Remington 700 Classic in 350 and would like to try this load in it. Also I have the choices between Sierra, Nosler and North Fork bullets, which should I try first. This load will hopefully be used for spring black bear.

I also had a Classic in 350 RemMag and never got close to that kind of velocity....I would work up very, very carefully starting with no more than 56 grains of powder.

I'm not sure about the 673, but my 350 is built on a Mauser which let's me use a longer col then factory. I can get 2615 fps with 250 gr bullets, and 2750 with 225's. From a 20" barrel. - Dan

I too have a .350 Classic, I had the magazine box changed and feed ramp altered to allow a longer seating depth. I picked up almost 3-10th's of an inch, helped a great deal with 250gr bullets. I also use 748 but I'm not going to say how much because I'm sure it would be unsafe in an unaltered rifle. I spent a lot of time working up safe loads and my goal was never to wring absolute velocity out of the gun, this is not a velocity round. Having said that I will say that this rifle chronos 2,780ish with 225gr Sierras and 225gr Partitions, and 2,650ish with 250gr Hornadys and Speers. Please keep in mind thats with a lot more room in the case. There's enough throat in the classic to act like weatherbys free bore so no pressure problems from that. As I'll bet DB Bill can attest to this rifle is very accurate often shooting 3 shot clover leaves on target, as a bonus, with the 225 Sierras sighted 3 inchs high at 100 the 250 Hornadys are exactly 1 1/2 inch lower , or 1 1/2 inch above aim point. I hope Remingtons efforts have differant results this time from last, this is a great caliber and a tremendous hunting round. A 225gr Partition 2 inchs high at 100yrds is dead on at 200 and 8 inchs low at 300, at 300 it's packing almost 2400 ft. lbs of energy. Gun writers killed this caliber years ago by claiming it was a short range round (nobody wants to hear that about their favorite boomer)and they said it was a kicker(in the 600 it was)in the classic with a Pachmyer Decelarator it's very managable. As you've probably noticed I'm biased, I've knocked a number of elk on their butt with this round and it's a dandy!---Shoot Safe---montdoug

Hey mountdog, Excellent post! Be careful about "not telling" the exact Load, or people will think we are in cahoots. Completely agree that a person ALWAYS needs to Develop their own Loads.

I've got a 20" 350RemMag M7KS and have used a good many of the old, original Fred Barnes 200gr 0.32" copper tubing bullets on Deer and Hogs. Just outstanding performance. Still have a few, but saving them for something serious.

I've primarily gone to the 200gr Hornady SP and have found it to be just excellent on our smaller Southeastern deer " IF " you hit a shoulder going in. That gets the bullet to open up and act like it should. Miss the shoulder and you "may not" get the same expansion.

Hey Redside, My 20" barrel is way too loud to shoot without some form of hearing protection - even when hunting. I use the Sonic Ear Valves (about $8-$12) and they resolved the problem.

I realize you are talking about a 22" barrel, but I'd strongly encourage you to never shoot or hunt with it unless you have your hearing protected. Once it is damaged, it doesn't get better.

225's at 2700 will, shall i say "move the rifle in a rearward motion with some force". [Big Grin]

about like a 338 in a heavier gun.
if you are just burning powder then i suggest the hornady sp's in 200. if you want a do-all then the nosler PT in 225 is my favorite. devastating [Big Grin]

it is a shame this caliber is not more widely used. it is very accurate [why i dont know but mine is warmed over and is scary accurate]. it will kill anything in NA and has been around since christ was a pup. you would think the wsm's are something new!
enjoy it. 61 grains is alot of 748. start below book and if you get there, tie you hat on......

I've had several 350's going back to the days of the original Rem 600s. I used one when I was stationed in Alaska, using the old anemic factory loads, to take moose, black bear and brown bear without any problems.

Shooting 250gr bullets at 2650fps (3900 ftlbs in a ltwt rifle) is something I wouldn't want to do anymore.....for that kind of performance I would reach for my short-action 375.

Montdoug,
How did you lengthen your magazine in your 700. I was just talking to my gunsmith about my 350 and he was pointing out that if I had a longer magazine I could get more out of the 350. I plan to work with the Win 748 powder but it sounds like I"ll start at 56 grains and work up. I'll let everyone know what happens. By the way my Remington classic wears a 2-8 Baush and Lomb Balvar compact scope and I hope to use it for black bear this spring.

Redside-- Due to an excess number of thumbs (10) I have serious smithing done by some one with considerably fewer thumbs than I. In this case it was Ben Forkin of "Forkin Custom Classics" in White Sulphur Springs MT. Ben trained under Hamilton Bowen, and while his speciality is turning Ruger single action revolvers into works of art that shoot small groups with calibers so big they scare me, he's great on anything and from where I live he's one good gopher hunt down the road. I do know Ben put a longer magazine box in it and worked the feeding over , it didn't cost much and if you call him I'm sure he'd be glad to give you the particulars.He's a friendly guy and doesn't mind talking to ya. Back around 1966-67 there were 4 Elders(local Heros of mine) who had 350RemMags. Two had M600s and the other two had M660s. I'd hang around the edges of this group and absorb all the info concerning hunting and shooting they would offer. You never knew just what the argumen... uh make that "serious discussion" would go into. So, I was always listening to their collective wisdom and trying to separate the real from the real-but-slightly-enhanced. [Wink]

On a rare occasion, they would look me over and invite a question from me. Never failed that once I finally asked, one of them would always say, "Speak Up - Boy! Quit mumbling!!"

Not sure if the 350RemMags contributed to the demise of their hearing, or if it was gone long before. But, they sure didn't let me near the Range without hearing protection.

One of those Heros left.
