12FLVSS300gr 45 Colt load question
Hey,
I'm looking to load a Hornady .452 300gr XTP in my 45 Colt carbine for hunting. The only loading info for a 300 grainer that I can find is a 300gr Sierra JSP so that is the data what I am working with. They list a minimum load of W296 at 18.6gr and a max of 21.5gr with an OAL of 1.65. My concern is that the crimp groove on their bullet is apparently in a different place than on the XTP. With the XTP's groove, I get the standard max oal for the cartridge of 1.6" instead of the 1.65 that Speer lists. Is this load range acceptable considering the slightly shortened OAL?
Another thing that concerns me is that the Speer book doesn't tell you when a load is compressed and this one appears to be... I'd be compressing it .05 more than their data accounts for.
Thanks,
Ruger#1
P.S. Sorry, thinking as I'm typing. It just occurred to me that the shape of the bullet nose might account for the .05 and I might not be compressing it more after all... I guess what I need to find out is a measurement from the base of the bullet to the middle of the crimp groove to see if I am actually seating the XTP deeper in the case than I would the Sierra. Anyone have a caliper and some of those 300gr .4515 Sierra JSPs they can get a measurement from?

This is from Hodgdon website. I know they have more info too if you give them a call or email
If you call Hornady they can help you for loading data. They have been very helpful in the past.
