Loading for the 260 Rem
I'm about to recieve my Model 700 LSS mounatian rifle in 260 Rem, and have a few questions.

I'm using RL19 and H4831 with 120 & 140 gr. bullets, any recipes or tips regarding these two powders, or any other powders I may want to try if these don't work.

What range of bullet weights will the 1-9" twist shoot? Are long, aerodynamic 140's and 160 gr. round noses too long? What about lightweight 85-90 gr. bullets?

Please feel free to comment on your experiences loading for the 260 Rem cartridge. Suggestions are also welcome.

6.5 -

Using 140 grain Speer flat base spitzers in 260, I've gotten excellent results with slow burning powders like I7828, H1000, H4831SC and R22, as well as medium-slow numbers like I4831, R19 and the 4350's. 2750-2800 FPS in a 22" Mtn Rifle barrel, with good (1-1.5" 5 shot groups) is not hard to do.

Using 129 Hornadys with the same powders gives good results and 100 - 150 FPS more velocity. Some guys report good luck with Varget and other faster powders, but, I've never used any of those powders with anything heavier than 120's.

Good luck - the 260 is a lot of fun to play with.

R-West,

Thanks for the info! My 260 Encore barrel should be in my hands early next week....

I was anticipating 2700 fps using 140s and H4831SC with the 25" barrel. Now I can dream about 2800fps with 140s!

I'd certainly think 2800 with 140's should be a piece of cake with a 25" barrel. Keep us posted.

I picked up a box of 100 gr. Ballistic Tips. They should shoot pretty flat @ 3200 fps, I'll use them for coyotes.
