I have shot the Hornady 223 Superformance factory round thinking that if it shot good, I could just copy the OAL, powder, etc...Well, it shot excellent, so I immediately went out and bought a box of 53 grain VMAX and 1lb of Hogden Superformance powder. NOT SO FAST; the powder is definitely not just superformance powder, but a mix. Does anyone have any good combos or low/high powder charges using the 53 gr VMAX bullet and this powder? I haven't been able to find anything on Hogden's site for this combo, and I was hoping maybe it was in the Hornady book and someone could share (I only have the Speer and Barnes book currently) until I could get my hands on a book.

Superperformance powder is way too slow for 223.

I've been wanting to try LeverEvolution in .223. Bet that would hum.

What velocity were you getting with your rifle using this ammo?

You said something in your post that caused me to pause. You mentioned that you thought the powder in those factory loads was a mix. Did you mean a mixture of 2 or more powders? From what I've read, but not experienced, the mixing of 2 or more powders is getting into the red zone .....fast. I would recommend not doing that.

I've found a good combination of velocity and accuracy out of my .223 700 Rem shooter using RL-7 and 40g Nosler Ballistic Tips. I know that's not what you requested, but it is a screamer. I'm shooting it out of a 26" bull barrel with about a 6" suppressor added on and using a generous amount of RL-7 I'm getting 3,925 fps out of that load through my chronograph readings with great accuracy. I'm using LC military brass and CCI primers. It's a great load for rock chucks, jackrabbits, coyotes, badgers and deer.

It is a load that is above book and may/is not for all rifles. But could be approached with caution. Obviously your shooter will differ from mine and so on......

From what I have read the superperformance powder sold to reloaders is not the same as what is loaded in all the superperformance ammo. If I recall there is something like 16 different recipes for superperformance ammo in all the3 different calibers.
