Gentlemen:

Any advise on a starting load for this caliber using the CEB 400 grain solid?

I assume 1-14 twist is enough to stabilize this bullet?

I didn't want to fight my way through the 256 page thread re Terminal Ballistics...

I can't tell you anything about the CEB bullet. However, I've had excellent luck with AA4064 powder. My final worked-up load is 81 grains behind either a Hornady 400 RN or a Nosler 400 Partition. Either shoots to the same point of impact at a muzzle velocity of almost exactly 2400 fps. This is a full-power, full-pressure load in my rifle, so adapt this data accordingly.

I'll try to remember to look up the load data that I got from Michael458 this evening and post it for you. It was with 4320 powder and shoots very well. I can also see if I can find the load that I worked up for a 400 gr with Varget.

Nosler #6 shows data for the .416 Remmy and their 400 gr partition bullet:

Start loads: (they used Fed 215 mag primers)

67.o gr AA2015
73.5 gr IMR 4064
75.o gr Varget
77.o gr RL 15

I had several loads with rl 15 that went 1/2 moa with my 416 rem 79 -81 grs depending on the bullet

Be advised that this is the load data that I use for the .416 with the CEB's and not advising anyone to use it without proper load development.
The load that I worked up shoots all 5 shots touching tightly at 50 yards for both the solids and the noncons.
For the 400 gr solid CEB I am using 77 gr of IMR4320 and for the 370 gr NonCon CEB I am using 78 grains of IMR4320

I have no idea of the twist, it is in a Safari weight Blaser R8. And no sir, I did not chrono those loads. But they certainly killed the Cape buffalo more than adequately. Bullet performance was great. No exits from either the killing shot (1st) or the insurance shot at a much closer distance. This was one of the biggest bodied bulls I have seen or taken and the NonCons, both shots caused a massive amount of damage. The first shot at about 50 yards penetrated the left side behind the front leg and buried in the offside shoulder, the insurance shot penetrated next to the spine at approximately 8-10 yards and the bullet was recovered under the hide on the brisket. The NonCons expended 100% of their energy inside the animal. I like them.

Looked up the blaser twist: its the same as my Winchester: 1-14. Your results are impressive and thanks again for your help.

I would add BL-C(2) and A2520 as good powders for the 416 Rem, but haven't tried the CEB yet.

Nosler lists a load with their 400 gr. bullets for the 416 RM with a 24" barrel as follows":

RL15 81 grs, 2503 fps (MAX)

Quickload suggests it's doable, but with W760 or Re17. Has anyone been able to duplicate this load and get 2500 fps? Just curious.

I'm loading 81gr of RL15 with 400gr Swift A-Frames and it chronoes at 2400fps in a Win70 with a 23" barrel.
