Like a total idiot i took out my chronograph today doing some velocity checks of shotshells.....

Yup, you guessed it....the wad hit the display and "took it out". I just ordered another one for $85 plus shipping.....and this one will have some protection on the unit for wayward wads....

If you plan on testing shotshells.....be duly advised!!!

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Lets not forget muzzle loader sabots and grease cookies from a 45-120 Sharps, I smoked 2 chronos that way, Damn.

At my range I will typically be the best shot with a rifle and the worst with a pistol.

Chronographs last one magazine full of ammo from a pistol around me, before I accidentally shoot them.

I have never come close to shooting a chrono with a rifle.

Right now, I am going to go a whole year before I shoot over a chrono with a handgun.

LMAO! There seams to be a basic rule - if you shoot enough over a chrono one day you WILL take it out!

I've been shooting over a Chrony for several years now - had a couple shots where the muzzle blast lifted the screens off. It was all I could do but laugh at it as I put it back to gether.

Just gotta love it...the hobby that is!

Robert

I think that I might have the world's oldest chronograph skyscreens. I bought a Pact between 1981 and 1984 and have yet to shoot it.

I was just shooting over it last weekend.

I place them 3ft from muzzle, per SAMMI. It seems to help in not giving "things" enough time to get off course enough to do damage.

I still had a few close calls though at some point.....back edge of unit has a few half-dimples on the edge.

Secured screens and get a blast deflector in front of display are helpful.

My Chronograph has served me perfectly since I bought it 10 years ago. It remains in it's original shipping carton on a shelf in the shop, unopened.. Big Grin Big Grin

You say that as if you think it was a "bad thing" that happened. Big Grin

That created the opportunity for you to help get the economy rolling(along with the pieces of chronograph). clap

Plus you know the "Wads" are running at a "Killer Level". Or "Wads = (Killer)Pressure". Now if you can just get the Birds and Ducks within Wad range, you will be doing fine. BOOM

I thought it would be cheaper to shoot a fowling shot at the edge of the target, but I guess it wasn't. I turned my shooting chrony into a shot chrony!

FWIW my personal experience with annealing is non existant.....so I decline to comment except that I've had some professional experience in heat treating and reserve all practice to controlled temperatures and times and testing.....

If one can do metal treating with a candle he's a better man than me!

As to the 40 MM scope lenses.......I have no use for a scope of larger diameter......not that they may or may not have value......just that it's not my cup of tea!

I’ve read John Barsness’s articles in Rife magazine before. I never had a strong feeling about his writings one way or the other. If the title or headline doesn’t capture my interest I don’t bother to read the article no matter who wrote it.

I have noticed that some people circle the wagons rather quickly when ever you come around though. nilly Big Grin

Lincs Stalker, that’s a drag! I’ve seen a couple of Chronys (F-1 and an Alpha) meet the same fate at my range over the years. Hope you didn’t do that in front of too many witnesses. shocker So far my Alpha is still lead-free. sofa

Yeah . . . and I was a good shot twice in one day . . . popped the right front skyscreen upright first. The left one held it okay . . . until I popped it 5 rounds later . . .

Doh!

I didn't believe the BC for my 123 Scenars so I put the screens out at 100 yards and shot over them a couple of weeks ago. I still didn't hit the screens. Big Grin

Lost Sheep
This thread from last year probably should be combined with this one.

http://forums.accuratereloadin...=2511043&m=446105658

It starts out with pictures of a Chrony that had been dismantled by a 405 grain 45-70 bullet travelling about 1700 fps.

Lost Sheep, Good Luck

P.S. My chronograph now wears $50 worth of "insurance" in the form of a couple of pieces of channel iron. I have tested it. It will protect from a shallow hit from a .500 S&W with barely a skid mark.

If you have to use a 45-701 to kill a chrony, you are doing something wrong!
