loading for 8mm Mauser
A couple friends of mine have bought one of the Mitchell's Mausers' K98 Model 48 post-war manufacture Czech rifles. These were unissued and are in excellent condition. I hear that they are some of the strongest actions of the era. I was also told that published loading info is very conservative in consideration of lesser quality actions out there that were produced during German occupation.

My question is... Can I expect to safely get higher velocities than what is published? My Hornady book lists them as about 200fps behind a 30-06 with 170gr bullets and 100 behind with 220gr bullets.

thanks,
Ian

12, I load for several 8 mm Mausers. Actually if velocity is the goal, I find the 175 Sierra or 170 grain Speer, are the best choices. I love the Speer. It is one deadly havoc wreaking bullet.

I actually found that faster powders, with the bullet seated out long gets the best velocity and accuracy is excellent in my CZ and also Mauser made 8 mms.

My powder of preference has been RL 7. I highly recommend working up, but i have gotten unbelievable velocity out of this combo. Accuracy is also eye popping out of my CZ , VZ 24.

Email me off line if interested in the details.
Cheers and Good shooting
