I've never used a chronograph but it is next on my items to get list. I want a good one, something I can use not only for firearms but also archery. What are the recommendations and why? What should I 'stay away from' and why?

My shooting chrono is $80 and works great for most things, but...

1) is not picking up the signal from my .177 pellet gun.

2) It does not seem to get much higher than 4,000 fps with .223. A 33 gr and H110 is too fast to register.


I had one before this and was happy with it, until a .452" 250 gr JHP XTP with through the display at 1230 fps.

I shoot the metal "V" things every time, so I use soda straws now.

It sits on an old camera tri pod.

I use a Pact timer with a cronograph and trajectory feature. Fairly expensive but I like it. Like the readouts it gives plus the trajectory feature. Others may have the same features for less money. Mine is over 10yrs old. Mine also came with an infra red printer.

I've used the cheap Chrony and I've used the Prochrono. The prochrono is a much better unit IMO and has given me much less trouble as far as inaccuracy and error readings are concerned. The Prochrono has more features as well. You can upgrade the Chrony to have those features but then you'll have spent the same amount or more and have more than the 11 pieces to keep up w/ that already come w/ it. The Prochrono only has 7 pieces to contend w/. There was an outfit selling the Prochrono for $75 on ebay for a while, you may want to check over there and see if you can find one.

Hi Guys, thanks for the input, much appreciated. I'm sure my choice will be a CHRONY but I have to decide which one. I contacted SHOOTING CHRONY INC and they assure me all of their models are capeable of handling velocities from that of a paint ball, 30 f/sec, to 7000 f/sec. I want to use it for archery as well as for firearms, so again, all I have to do now is choice the model I want. Thanks again.
