C-ROYAnybody use H414 for their 338-06?
Well, I did the case prep lastnight and tonight I'm going to load the first rounds for my new 338-06. It is a re-barreled Mark X with a 23" Douglas barrel. I have 200 gr. Hornady & Speer SP's and 225 gr. Speer BTSP. I have 3 lbs. of H414 and about 3/4 of a can of IMR4350. The other powders I have are to slow. I thought about starting with 58.0 grs. of H414 and the 225 gr Speer BT and going up from there. What's some of the loads you fellow 338-06 club members are using? Thanks.

<ringneck>I have been working on loads for my 338-06 and I used IMR 4320 with the 225 Hornady. I was getting just a little below 2600. Very good accuracy however. Reloader 15 was slower yet. I was going to try IMR 4350 but Brad said to skip it and use the Hogdons in the 4350 Extreme. I'm still trying to find some. Kansas is not exactly a rifleman's paradise! Hope the others can help you out more than me.

Rob1SGHodgdon recommends H414 with some bullet weights. I have found that faster powders seem to do a little better with the 180-200gr bullets. I have tried anything in the 225 and above range but can get 2900 from a 200gr with IMR 4064 with a 24 in barrel. I will send you my spread sheet of loads if you want it. Just reduce 5% and work up as usual.Let us know how your load does.

triggerI load for 338 Hawk - 338-06 improved+.
Have had good results with H414 and 210 Nosler Partiton.
Standard disclaimer - start low and work up.
I get 2860 fps from 65 grains in the 338 Hawk.
That's all I can get in the case without compression. This is my hunting load. It took a Mule deer, Antelope and Whitetail this year. I'm very pleased with catridge and the bullet.
I can't really get enough H414 in the case with a 225 Partition or even 200 BT.
Good results from Varget with the 225 Partition and good results with RL 15 and the 200 BT.
Have heard of good results with H4350 with 225's see www.huntingnut.com

Please send me the spreadsheet when you get a chance I would like to look at it.
I think I might get a little faster powder and try. Should I go with H380 or Varget? I have a little RE15 I plan to try as well. I also think I would like to try some sierra 215-gr. bullets. Has anyone experimented with these bullets?

Frank NowakowskiI have found H4350 and IMR4350 to be about perfect for a 24" barreled standard .338-06 with 210-250 grain bullets. I'm not a big one on reinventing the wheel and really don't think you can do significantly better than the 4350's.
Great round, so happy that its semi legitimate with WBY chambering it in the Ultra Lt Weights. SURE wish Remington or Winchester would do the same .

JABI shoot the 215 Sierra in a 338 win mag. It's been my main hunting bullet for this gun...accurate and killed everything I've shot so far (deer and caribou).

The gun shop had powder 10% off and bullets 20% off. I got a lb. of Varget to try and a lb. of H4831SC for the 300 Win Mag. I got a box of Nosler 180 gr. Ballistic Tips and 215 gr. Sierra BTSP's. I also checked out the new Barnes manual. It has plenty of 338-06 data. I got a pen and paper and copied most of the data down. The shop owner is a nice guy. Well I'm ready to do some loading now. I plan to hit the range next week. I'll let everbody know how the loads work out.

AtkinsonI did a lot of experimental work with the 338-06 at one time in both the standard and improved form....
The only powder that I found to really work was IMR-4320 followed by IMR 4350, but 4320 was by far the best..
You just can't get enough of H414 in the case to get top velocities....

fredj338I think Ray s right, I have had good luck getting hiher vel. & good accuracy w/ IMR4320 & RL15. My hunting load is 53.5gr RL15, 210grNP & fed. LRmatch in WW or FC cases, 2750fps from a 22.5"bbl. Good luck w/ your new yot!

Shoots better than some of my varminters.
Best load, 5 shots .350", 225 Horn SP, WLR, R-P, 57/IMR 4320, OAL 3.55, CHRONO OEHLER 33 2708 fps, ES 4, SD 2. This load stays consistent since I built the rifle.
I doesn't like Horn 200 SP but it will stay in 1.5"
The following hang around <3/4 for 3 or 1 to 1.25 for 5. Some I am still working up.
Nos 200 BT, 59.5C/IMR 4320, R-P, R 9 1/2M, A-2895, ES 34, SD 17.
Nos 225Part, 57.IMR 4320, R-P, R 9 1/2M, A-2670, ES 21, SD10.
Any of the above will do the job.
I'm doing some case work and a few other experiments with this toy. Will be trying the Nosler 180's come spring. Haven't taken any game yet unless you consider rabbits or squirrels. Not much left over for the dog.
Hornady data for RL-15
200 gr 46.2/2400 to 57.1/2900
225 gr 42.5/2200 to 54.2/2700
250 gr 42.0/2100 to 50.9/2500
200 Horn moly 55/RL-15, 2640, ES 10, SD 5, 3/.500, shows real promise but low velo. Looks like about 70 fps/grain increase so that would put it about 120 fps low for the Hornady data but this rifle has a .400 long throat and seems to need 2 to 3 gr more powder to equal out and the data seems to point to that. 2 more grains and 140 fps would be 57/2780 and 2 more/140 would equal 59/2920.
