I'm looking at loading .40 S&W....OK, I'am not trying to assume anything here...Hodgen Says I can use Clays with a .400 diam. bullet on any S&W .40 load W/Clays. OK... so where would I find info. for the use of a Berry's plated bullet. And I'am assuming 10mm cal. is the same thing as.40. Cabelas list Berry's plated bullet as .401" dia. Can I use this bullet with the hodgen load data for the .400

fredj338While the 40S&W is a 10mm, you do NOT use 10mm data, they are different cartridges. Berry's are like a lead bullet & run 0.001" larger. You typically load plated & lead bullets w/ a sightly lower charge wt for sim. pressures/velocity. IMO, I would NOT use Clays in the 40. Clays gets really wierd near the top end & the 40 runs @ high pressure as is. Excpet for very light loads, Clays & other uberfast powders are an accident waiting to happen in the 40. One bullet setback could really ruin your day. Move upto a med. burner like WSF, Unique or Universal (not Clays).

Ol` JoeBerry recommends keep your loads at the mid to low end of the charts on their web site.

the jiggerI have been loading the .40 with Berry's 165gr HP for 15+ years. Depending on the particular pistol, I load 6 to 6.5gr of Unique. I have used this load in a Glock 23, FNP40,and an EAA Witness compact. all have shot the load very comfortably and accurately.

I know, that is why I noted it at the end. Universal works fine, Clays, nope, not in my guns.
