When comparing barrel length between two different rifles it is not a safe assumption to blame all the loss on barrel length. I've seen two different rifles with the same length barrel give that much difference. Only real way to know how much is due to barrel length is by using the same barrel after it was shortened.
Hey vapodog. I was always told it was how well you could use your weapon that counted.

As usual just my $.02

TailgunnerSame barrel, same lot of ammo. At 26" was running 2720 fps and at 25" was running 2995 fps. The difference was all in the chamber/throat. Slop hole with a .3132 throat diameter vs minimum spec chamber with a .3085 throat diameter

krakyMy savage with 24" barrel is almost 100 fps FASTER than my 300 win mag tikka with 25" barrel with the exact same ammo. BUT the tikka is a tack driver and the savage an average shooter.

RicochetIn the comparisons above, the Stevens gives lower velocities but smaller groups than the Ruger. Some might say that better groups beat a few more FPS.
