.22 HORNET
Share Your Hornet Loads...Please
I would like to hear some of your .22 Hornet loads that have been successful for you. Especially any using Lil'Gun powder. Thanks

I have a friend who swears by 13 grains behind either a 40 or 45 grain bullet.

I have tried several bullets in my CZ527 using nothing but lil'gun. All loads have been most accurate around 13.3 grains. I am currently playing with 3 types of brass to see what works best. Don't see much difference so far.

Win 46gr HP behind 13.3gr of lil'gun seated to fit the mag will rip arctic ground squirrels in half. Similar results with Hornady 45gr Hornet and Sierra 40 and 45 hornets. I am currently working up a load with 37 grain Calhoons. I loaded some up to see if they would fit the mag (which they did barely) and sniped a few grouse. They appear quite accurate. Throat shots came easy. Looking forward to getting these ones on paper. I can't see trying any other powder in this round.

I was quite surprised with the steel I could penetrate using the 45 grain bullets at 20 yards. Both sides of an empty drum that a 22lr would not penetrate at all. I expected the bullet to explode on the first side. I will try to get a wolf with this load this winter. IJF

I am shooting 12 grains of IMR 4227 under a 35gr. VMAX and a CCI BR4 primer out of both my 77/22 and No. 1.

12 grs of 4227 in a Winchester case must be vibrated down so you can get the bullet started into the case, but it fits just fine in a Remington case.

I have also had fairly good accuracy with the 40gr VMAX over 11.5 gr of IMR 4227.

I just got a pound of Lil' Gun to try, in .22 Hornet and .17 Ackley Hornet, but haven't gotten around to either yet.

Best load I've found for my Ruger 77 is 13 gr Lilgun, 45gr Sierra sftpt, WW case and Win small pistol primer. Shoots sub-MOA.
Another good load is 12.2gr Lilgun and a 50gr Hornady sftpt.

Lilgun is, IMHO, the powder for the Hornet.

I bought a pound of Lil'gun when I bought my first (and only) Hornet and 13.0 gr under the 35 gr V-Max works so well I've never tried anything else. I clock right at 3000 fps & change from a Browning A-Bolt Micro Hunter that I believe has a 20" barrel. I would add that I finally started using a Lee Collet die for sizing which is very kind to the thin case wall and runout of loaded rounds is now very little. I think the loading technique for the Hornet is as crucial as powder/bullet combos.
