Anyone use Barnes solids?
I was going through my Barnes manual and noticed that they make 2 or three different bullet weights in a solid for most calibers. I was wondering if any of you were using barnes solids for anything, for instance in the mid range calibers like from the 270 on up, say to 358 or so?
I realize in the smaller calibers like the .224's to the 6mms, guys use them for fox and coyote. I was suprised that there Is enough demand for them in other calibers to actually have a selection.

Hey Daryl,

Unfortunately solids are not legal in BC for use on game. I sure would like to try some(GS Custom solids, 180gr FN) on Elk/Moose though. If they're good for African plains game they have to be good for our various deer species.

I did try some surplus 7.62 FMJ on coyotes about 15 years ago (statute of limitations must be up by now right?). I can see why they (in particular) are not legal. I drilled two coyotes and lost them both. I am sure they died soon after, but I wasn't able to find them. Very small blood trail. I was just hoping for smaller holes in the pelt, but that ended up working against me.

There was quite a demand for them in the 70's when fur prices were really high and got docked for holes...I don't know why there is a market for solids in smaller calibers today..

I have used the spitzer type solids in my 270. Ray is right that there really isn't any reason, but I like to go out and see what all it will shoot through. You'd be surprised how big a tree it will go through. I use alot of their solids in my 458 Lott, and really like them. I recently bought some TCCI solids and they look interesting but I haven't tried them yet.

Sooner,

What were the brand of spitzer solids you used in your 270? I have a friend who has given me the task of finding some 90 grain solids like he got for coyotes years ago. He doesn't know the brand just that they were 90 grains and 270. Any one out there with info? hibbertd@yahoo.com

Ray,
The guys use small caliber solids to shoot the small five mainly. It makes the taxidermists very happy. We have them down to 270 in FNs and will probably go smaller as time allows.

Wyoman, They were Barnes bullets. As I recall the lightest I found were 100 grs. I have seen some 80 and 90 gr fmj's somewhere, but I don't know who made them. I don't think your buddy would complain about 100 gr barnes spitzer solids. I don't think a coyote would notice that extra 10 grs.
