Uniflow Powder Measure
I'm running Varget through my powder measure and finding things not very uniform as far as weighing the charges. I tap twice before letting the powder fall into the scale pan and one more tap to make sure all the granules have fallen out of the UPM. Then I put her on my scale and I can get anywhere from -.8gr to +.6gr measurements. Most often it is within range of -.5gr to +.3gr ... I think this is still too large of a tolerance. Besides, it takes forever to trickle the powder in and get the exact weight I am looking for. I'm OK with this if I'm only loading 20 rounds but I do five times that in a night.
What should I do and is this normal behavior for the UPM? Those electronics powder dispensers are looking pretty attractive but the price isn't.
I need to load a 750-1000 round batch for a PD shoot in June. Give me your opinions please.
Do you have a baffle in yours, and is it oriented correctly?
What I like to do with mine is make sure it is mounted firmly, and move it with a sharp motion, both up and down, so I get a noticeable click noise. That seems to settle things uniformly.
No baffle. Where do you get one?
if you are using stick powders, don't count on accuracy mush better than .3-.6+ grs. they will throw ball powder wonderfully, but stick powders are better suited to a digital scale and a trickler.
Regarding the baffle, call rcbs and they will send you one free. I am guessing you also have the old lid too, ask for a new one of those. It is a slip fit cap that you can't knock off.
OH, and welcome to the forums too!
