Howdy yall,
I have just had a new rifle built. Blue printed 700 action, douglass air guage match barrel with a #1 contour.
I will be hunting whitetail at long ranges,400yds plus.
Any good flat shooting accurate loads welcome.
I am looking to try some loads and will adjust according to how the gun likes them.

My Browning likes around 72gr of H-1000 with a Sierra 160 gameking. I can get around 1.5-2" @350yds with this load. I don't have any longer range to try. ***This load is higher than recommended in the current manuals.***

try 63 grains IMR 4350 under a 139 spitzter flat base. I have gotten one ragged hole groups at 200 yds. out of 2 different rifles with this load. Also, took a buck in texas at 375yds estimated by the guide. Never had a deer run on this round. they all just collapsed where they stood. good luck with your gun with whatever shoots good for you.

Since the laser rangefinders have come out I have confirmed that I can't estimate range that well when it gets in the 300 yard area and over.

I always wanted a "flat shooting" load too but once I studied the wind drift data and remaining energy I found that they are limiting factors also.

So download "Pointblank" at www.huntingnut.com and study the numbers for your proposed loads. I am looking at the data here for my 7mm WSM varmint load and there is a 13.65" difference in drop between 300 and 400 yards or a 10.55 moa change with it's 260 yard zero. That's a hit or a miss for sure without good distance information.

That said the above suggestions are just fine.

I have had good luck with the 140 Nosler partition and 4831 at long range in that cartridge. There are many other loads too.

I have had the best results with reloader 22 and 140gr ballistic tips.You will need a laser rangefinder but the most important factor will be the hundreds of rounds a year in practise that a person must do to keep their shooting skills honed well enough for accurate shooting past 400 yards.

I'd look at the 160 gr. Nosler Accubond for a long range deer bullet. These things are sleeker than shit, .531 BC. Launched @ 3000 fps, they hit 400 yards packing 2300+ fps, and 1900 ft-lbs of energy. They don't drop below 1500 ft-lbs until 560 yards! As for powders, I'd look at RL22, H4831sc, H1000, or RL25 for the 160 gr. class.

As far as rangefinding, I will be using a laser rangefinder, as far as practicing, I am a long range tactical shooter and have been in the company for a while. I shoot about 50 rounds a week ranging from 10yds to 1000yds. I practice often and will stay in tune with my rifle.

I'll have to try those 160grainers myself Tod - thanks for the info. I have been using the 150gr BT's over the 140gr BT's because they have about the same ballistics (150gr has a BC of .493, while the 140gr is .485) and the 150gr seems more accurate in my rifle.

The best I found in my 7mag is the 160gr partition using 62.5 grains of IMR 4831. It's the only load that will group 1/2inch at 100yds in my rifle.

Good luck, it's a great caliber and capable of taking anything as long as you can see it.

I agree with the load above. However, I've found the 162-grain Hornady to be a little more accurate than the Nosler Partition. But somewhere between 61.5 and 63 grains of IMR 4831 is a magic combination.

H-4831-69.8 grs-139 gr-3270 av.fps- Hornady Interlock or New Interbond, used that load since 1972 fast and effective on deer even on the open range on the run. One load higher in Hornady Vol # 2 book 71.4, but this was in under an inch in accuracy in all 3 guns I have had. Have shot 14 elk with the same load and the interlock bullet. ;

I favor a medium load of IMR 7828 with the 140-grain Nosler Partition bullets. Something about the recoil seems different, and it groups as well as the H-4831 or RL-22 loads I've used, maybe more consistently.

I also use 145-grain Speers sometimes, and they've worked well. Another nice thing about the Speers is, they also make a 145-grain match bullet that is quite nice for dialing in a load, then I can switch to the same weight hunting bullet for a trip.
