Howdy all - looking to start rolling my own for my new 376. I have a variety of bullet weights in standard and premiums available, but was thinking about picking up some GS Customs.

My dilemma is this - I'm looking to the GS's to give me a little more velocity without getting pressure crazy, but the bullets seem so long I'm afraid the long bullet will encroach too deeply into the powder space. Any thoughts on the issue?

I have some .375"/270 grain GS FN bullets on hand that I will be loading in my .376 Steyr. I have not built the loads yet, but I can measure the length of the bullet if that helps you.

My application is a solid for Cape buff, so I am not really concerned about muzzle velocity. I figure there will be enough for the typical ranges buff are shot at.

Ray has a method of seating long bullets outside the cannelure by using an undersized expander ball to increase neck tension. He still uses a light crimp also. I have not tried this myself, but if I was trying to get every last bit of velocity possible for 300 grn and heavier bullets, I would give it a try. My own experience has lead me to prefer loads that are usually a little below max. I've worked up loads for 225 and 270 grn Hornady SP so far using Varget powder and Hodgdon data. I will work up a load for 300 grn Partitions soon. I don't foresee any problems with case capacity to achieve a max load using Varget, although I'm sure it will be a compressed load.
