squeezeForming 6mm-284 brass
I have a question about forming 6mm-284 brass.
Do I need a forming die, if I am forming
6mm-284 from 6.5mm-284? I see Redding has a
forming die for .284 Win, to 6mm-284, and I see
that takes only one forming die, to get the necks
down to 6mm, from 7mm. So can a well lubed
6.5mm case be formed down to 6mm, with just a
FL die, and me leaning on the Rock Chucker?
I am getting the tools purchase set for loading
6mm-284, and I am trying to decide just
what dies I will need. I could use the money
for some tools "upgrades", if I don't need the
forming dies.
Thanks in advance for any info you might
provide.

R FlowersWell, just my experience, but I had to go with an intermediate die to make 6-284 brass from regular 284 Winchester brass.
I used to shoot a 6-284 and found I needed to use a 25 caliber die as an intermediate step to keep from ruining the necks on the cases.
A 25-284 trim die worked fine to size the cases to .257 before squeezing them down to 6mm.

StonecreekI form .25-284 directly from .284 brass in one pass. If you're starting with 6.5/284 brass, you should have no trouble reducing it by .02" by running it directly into your 6mm sizing die. Use a good lube like Imperial Die Wax or an oil-based lubricant, but use it sparingly so as not to wrinkle the shoulders.

308SakoI too shoot a 6/284 and have no trouble forming from 6.5/284. However to maintain the concentricity I make sure the cases are square and the outside of the necks has been deburred fully to facilitate the operation. It's a snap when it all comes together, and use the lube! Great round with reach. Enjoy

I doubt it. I use an RCBS .25/.284 trim die as an intermediate step going from .284 to 6mm/.284, but I think the 6.5/.284 brass necks would be small enough that you could just size them directly to 6mm.
The next time I need brass for mine, I'll get some 6.5/.284 cases and try it.
