Accuracy With A Silencer Or Without!!
I found a brand new Sako A7 S rifle in 308. Winchester.

Came threaded and ready with a silencer.

So I have a perfect rifle to try to see what happens!

Stay tuned.

I'm gonna say it will be as accurate, but not necessarily with the same loads.

If all is aligned, a lot depends on the barrel contour. My son's Sako 85l poa was lower but still spot on. My Ruger Alaskan with the stubby 20" barrel nothing changed! I know of threads on the rifle being off and the treads on the can being off. Perfect reason to shoot!

Rifle came from the factory threaded, and the person I got it from game a silencer with it.

I am afraid we have change of plans.

A friend expressed interest in this rifle, and he will give a Sako 223 Remington.

We might use this one instead.

More development.

Apparently to do a proper silencer v non silencer test one has to test several rifles!!

And in different calibers!

This was the discussion going on here while enjoying a BBQ with steaks and VERY spicy chicken!

So, I am going to look for these rifles and once gathered will proceed with the test.

Right now I am getting ready for our annual safari.

Once I am back I will start.

Any of you interested in playing a history game?

I have found a 22 rim fire rifle, by Londons oldest gun maker.

Established in 1770, that is 254 years ago!

I will put a silencer on it and test it.

Any guesses of the gunmakers name?

It is.

And they are one of my favorite 22 rifles too.

Holland and Holland sells Sako rifles at very high prices, and stamp them SHOT AND REGULATED BY HOLLAND AND HOLLAND.

In the late 70’s and 80’s I used to spend a lot of time at Holland & Holland shop in Bond Street London.

One of the directors was a close friend, he used to stay at my house when he visited Dubai.

They had some old gentlemen there who had peculiar ideas about guns.

Here is an example.

They had 6mm ammo for one of their own rifles.

Shoots a 100 grain bullet at 2900 fps.

One man there was telling me it is absolutely the very best rifle for hunting stags.

Told him it is only a glorified 243 Winchester!

“My dear sir! Nonsense! There is no comparison at all! This is a HOLLAND AND HOLLAND”

One could mention Weatherby.

It is a taboo word.

We used to have endless arguments, all in good humor!

And apparently they looked forward to my visits as I looked forward to visiting them!

Sadly he passed away relatively young, with cancer.

He was a very close friend of Steve Vogel, of Ruger.

Steve was married to Bill Ruger’s daughter.

A wonderful family.

I used to stay at their home when I went to the States.

I shot a few groups.

This rifle is very accurate with certain ammo.

I am shooting 3, 5-shot groups of each ammo I have.

One lot without silencer and one with.

Our target paper has six targets on each, so the results can be seen clearly.

So far, it seems the accuracy with the silencer is better!!

Funny results.

Test is done.

I have to get one of the boys to scan the targets and I will post them here.

Tested over 80 different types of ammo.

From subsonic to ultra velocity.

More types shot better with the silencer.

My own testing is nowhere near as extensive but the results are similar.
I have tested four different rifles with two different silencers (silencers are of the same design though).

That's a very pretty stock on the rifle!

Roughly two thirds of the ammo shot better with the silencer.

Thanks, Saeed. As always, fascinating results.

I wonder if I am wrong in thinking that the improvements in accuracy are the result of a beneficial change in barrel harmonics with certain ammunition?

Not a distinct POI change as with the centerfire rounds.

changing POI was a gun book writer's guess apparently as I always suspected cause Ive always tested my guns with the potato on and off, cuz cousin, I like to shoot irons amd test off the bench for sight in and accuracy without the kick..

Thanks Saeed, its been needed for ions..
