carnold724Safe to substitute large rifle magnum primers for large rifle
In my 22-250 in a pinch?

carnold724Nevermind, a search yeilded my answer

homebrewerI'd guess it is. A magnum primer just throws a larger flame to efficiently ignite the larger mass of powder. I'm not going to do a search like carnold did. I'm waiting to hear what the next poster says...

ramrod340There is no problem swapping std for Mag. However I WOULD NOT do it without backing up on the charge and working back up.
As usual just my $.02

Agreed.....but every time I've done it, I wind up at the same place as I was formerly..... That said.....I'd never just switch them!!!!!especially when loading "Max"

Hunt-ducksall I use is Fed GM215M in my 22-250 along with 38.0grs of H-380 (what a boring ass load) never backed off just switched primers and loaded groups shrunk 3/4" with switch.

sourdough44There is a slight size difference with the 2 large size primers, one is taller. The small rifle/pistol is the same size. I have used a few sp mag primers in lower charged 204 Ruger loads without any problems. YMMV
O.K.. I skimmed the title & though we were comparing LR to LP.

Not necessarily so. Too many other variables to make such a blanket statement.

7.62RebelI have 1000 Fed LR mag primers and use them in my 45/70 rather than using my LR,but I don't load "hot"-450grLFN at 1350,so no problems and seem to group the same.

Conversely, when I began working up loads for my 7mm Mag, I only had Large Rifle primers on hand. I found a load that was accurate, and kept using the same primers ever since, and that's been 20 years ago. No problem with the loads in cold weather either.
