Can someone explain this reloading tool?
On ebay:

SAVAGE 1904 Reloading Tool For 38-55 Win

A day and a half still left in the auction and the bid is up to $983. I am wondering what makes this so desireable?

Sorry can't seem to be able to post an image

Most antiques only have value to the "ones that really want it" Wink

While I wouldn't give you a plugged nickel for it, based on that website the price compares. Now are they selling I have no clue.

Sell it for what the market will bear. Big Grin

Only thing I would say is that it's rare to find an antique loading tool with all the accessories. This one looks to be in great condition. Bidding wars causes high prices.

That tool is what frontiersmen used as a bullet seating press for the ammo back in the day, well, after the breech loaders came on the scene. Looks strange now doesn't it!

looks more like a breech seating tool for scheutzen shooting to me.
it pushed the cast bullet into the throat of the rifle then the case was seated in the chamber behind it.
you used the same case over and over without re-sizing it and the bullet was always started straight in the throat.
it's better than bench rest tooling since even a crooked cut chamber has no affect on the accuracy like it does on fixed ammo.

Not a scheutzen bullet seater. It is for reloading metallic cartridges. You could buy the tool with a die for a particular cartridge, and dies for other cartridges as accessories.

I get the value is in the eye of the beholder thing.

I have a pre-WWII A.A. Easton cast iron single stage press with two shellholders. To the right collector it is probably worth a ton.
