Point my way to the lightest most accurate 416 Rigby load..
I will be shooting at our club's over 40 bore matches where there will be 25-30 rounds fired. I noticed many of the guys were shooting reduced loads 45-70's. One fellow had a rifle chambered in a 45 ACP. Barely a pop when compared to the others. I just got the 416 and don't want to shoot 30 heavy loads. This will be my first attempt at reloading rifles so I don't want too complex of a recipe. If you would point me to a good reference I would appreciate it.

D HunterWell what are you trying to accomplish? I know you want an accurate low recoil load. You can get Barnes X bullets in 300 gr. Loaded to about 2300-2400 they ought not be too hard kicking. There is talk of good accurate loads with XMP 5744. It is a bulky fast powder meant for large BP cases. You can call XMP up and find the max load and back off 10 % and see what your rifle likes. Good hunting.

p dog shooterHeres what I use in my 416 taylor for a very light load . A resized 44 cal lead pistol bullet sized to .416 ahead of 8 gr of Herco for about 800 fps. no recoil low noise and in my rifle well put them into one hole at 25 yards.
What I'm attempting to accomplish is two fold. First is to have a low recoiling accurate load for the matches where 30 rounds are fired. I can handle recoil but 300-400 grain bullets at over 2000 fps might be a bit too much for 30 rounds. The second purpose would be for high volume range practice at field positions to essentially become one with the gun. During these range sessions I will finish off with hunting level rounds. I want to practice, practice, practice.....800 fps ...... hmmm..... what type of filler do you use?
I use 100 Gr of H4831SC with Barnes 400 Gr Triple Shock bullets. While not light recoiling, this gives me one hole accuracy at 100 yards. I don't believe it can be beat for accuracy. There is no room for filler.
They also make a 350 Gr TSX, but I haven't tried it.
