Reloader 25 in the 264 Mag

I have only a theoretical answer for you. I never even saw a 264 WinMag!

For a 24 inch barrel and 58000 PSI max pressure, RL-25 is very, very good according to QuickLoad.

120X/70.5 gr. / 3248 fps
130x/ 68.4 gr /3136 fps
140x/ 66.6 gr. /3032 fps.

If you ever try one of these loads, back off at least 5% (10% is safer) and work up. Let us know how it goes.

You poor man, never even SAW a 264?? You must get out more. Fired the loads today with the following results. The rifle is a Model 70 with 26" barrel.
Barnes 120 "X"
RL 22 60.0 3154 fps
61.0 3181 fps
62.0 3244 fps
RL 25 65.0 3224 fps
66.0 3159 fps
67.0 3245 fps

Barnes 130 "X"
RL 22 59.0 3039 fps
60.0 3035 fps
61.0 3064 fps
RL 25 64.0 3079 fps

57.0 2769 fps

CCI magunum primers were used throughout, ambient air temperature from 80-95. I could have easily increase the RL 25 loads another 1-3 grains as there was no sign of pressure with my loads. RL 25 gave higher velocity than RL 22, especially with heavier bullets, and with no pressure signs.

I know that you have asked about the use of Reloder 25 and the 264 Winchester cartridge.

As some additional information, I would like to suggest that you consider Hodgdon H-870 for your 140 grain bullet usage. Using Winchester cases, Federal 215 or 215M primers, a 140 grain bullet, and H-870 I have achieved muzzle velocities of 3,207 fps from an original Winchester Model 70 Westerner, with a 26 inch barrel. The group size was 0.64 inches.

Thanks for your reply Pumba. I have used H870 with my 257 and 340 Weatherby rifles with poor success, both in velocity and accuracy, but since I still have some on hand, I will have to give it a try in the 264.

I used 66 gr RL25 with the 140 Sierra. 3150 fps and 3/4" at 100 yds. Model 70 Win 26" barrel.

Thanks to Pop earlier in the year, I worked up a load using 66.0 R25 with a 140gr Hornady for 3060 fps with good accuracy. I know you were requesting Barnes data, but I thought this may help you.

I don't know if my input might help , but I'll give it anyway.
I buy powder from a gentleman who shoots the 1000 yd benchrest shoots in Williamsport Pa.
This fellow knows a thing or two about shooting, reloading, and rifles. The wall of trophies is his testimony.
He says not to bother using reloader 25 in barrels shorter than 26 inches, and that is pushing the lower limit.
Not because of pressure or anything, it is just too short of a tube to burn all the powder (pressure is directly proportional to velocity).
for 264 win mags, 870 has been recommended as THE powder for it.
I've played with reloader 25 in my 24 inch 8mm rem mag, but have switched to a faster burning powder just because of the short tube.
