Any 358 Norma Data ?

Tacks My old 358 has always shot very well with IMR 4350 and just about any 250 gr bullet you choose. I use the Norma cases CCI 250 primers.I start with about 70 grs and work up to a max of about 74. This was safe in my rifle. This combination was so accurate(3 shot groups @ 100 yds often touching)I never worked with any other powders. I would also suggest leaving the 200 & 225 gr slugs for the 358 Win and Whelans.The Hornady & Speer bullets are good if you target is 150 yds or so. For close work on large animals stay with the Nosler Partition,Swift A frame or Barnes X.

I recently worked up some loads in a 350 rigby, that has almost identicle case capacity to that or the 358 norma, the rigby holds slightly more powder. I found the 250 gr hornady rn shot the most accurately over 66 gr Varget and a Federal 210 primer.

Try the speer 250 gr bullet with 66 gr of IMR 4895. Norma brass, Rem primer. Work up to this, etc. Should get you 2820 fps out of a 24" barrel. - Dan

66.4 gr H4895 - 2,800 fps
64.7 gr IMR 4064 - 2,700 fps
68.3 gr IMR 4320 - 2,800 fps
74.0 gr IMR 4350 - 2,800 fps
76.7 gr H450 - 2,700 fps

Here's what my Nosler No. 4 shows:

24" bbl, 1:12 twist
Norms Cases
Fed 215 caps 250 gr Partition

ALL MAX LOADS !!!

57.0 gr RL 12 - 2,478 fps
62.0 gr RL 15 - 2,568 fps
62.0 gr IMR 4320 - 2,552 fps
72.0 gr IMR 4350 - 2,628 fps
71.5 gr RL 19 - 2,536 fps
72.0 gr H 414 - 2,565 fps

Quite a difference in data - mostly due to the age of the manuals (1980 for Hornady and 1996 for Nosler) and the prevelance of laywers/lawsuits.

My take on this data is that the Hornady is probably what you can safely load to. The Nosler data looks whimpy. I can get my 375-338 (essentially a 375
Norma) to 2,600 fps with a 300 gr partition out of a 21" barrel. They show only one combo that can get 2,600 fps with a 250 grain bullet. My .338 Win can
do this with ease also. I think 2,700 would be a good target velocity based on good case life. I don't have any .358 bores (I hope to soon) but I know a lot
of Whelen users swear by RL 15 and Varget.

The loads that lars posted seem to be pretty mild, almost to the point of Whelan velocities. Although on the other hand, perhaps the loads (people's personal loads) I've seen here and elsewhere for the Whelan are pushing pressures well above what they should.

I tried some of the posted loads you'all posted. Just about everything shot well. The 77 gr IMR4350 with 225 Nosler BT really was disruptive to the bank behind the back stop and all 5 touched. The 200 RN were a bit tighter stoked a grain under max with IMR 4350. This should be a good start as I try the 250 RN goonies. Thanks guys !
