300 WSM factory loads hot??

I have recently worked with several 300 WSM
magnum rifles and all have shown high pressure signs with factory 180 grain loads.

Anybody else seen this???

I'm the 1st response and don't want to get offthe subject but, winchester has put out some real warm factory loads in 7stw. I'm curious what brand of shells you are talking about.

Ross, what did the factory stuff clock in your rifle, and what's your barrel length?

I've gotten a definate "sense" that the first-run of 300 WSM stuff was a bit "hot." I heard of stuff in excess of 3,000 fps in 24" tubes. Olin may have throttled it back a bit since then. Perhaps you've got an "early" lot?

My 300 WSM was delivering right at 2,980 fps with both the PP's and FS's in a 24" bbl'd Win 70. I've since had the barrel shortened to 22" and will never see those velocities again. My handloads run from 2,880 to 2,950 with 180's. Mostly around 2,920, without excessive pressure signs. That suits me fine... nice cartridge the 300 WSM.

My gunsmith recently advised that I stay away from the factory 180 grain offering. He has held back a box that a few rounds were fired from idicating large mv variations.
Brad, I puchased 400 pcs. of Win brass about three months ago. I have found inconsistant OSDs just above the rim. Have you run across this? I'm not happy as many cases bind in my shell holders. I'm concerned that it may be causing some excess runout but currently have no tools to measure such.

My brother just bought a Browning in 300 WSM and we were shooting factory 165s and out of 8 shots the primers blew on 2 and there were signs of powder on the headstamp of the rest. We did not chrony it. I will check with my brother to see what he has done since then.

I have seen this on custom and factory
rifles recently. On Saturday I fired one
of our M15STS custom rifles and blew two
primers with sticky extraction, ejector marks, etc..

I remember reading some ware that the factory chambers were over sized?
Donï¿½t quote me, but that would be something to check, along with the actual speed of the bullet like was mentioned earlier..

Same here: H4350 and WLR primers.

I have noticed an occasional sticky case with the WW 180 PP factory load.
