Busterchops, what are you planning on powering that cheese burger with? BTW, what seating depth did you come up with? Was it similar to the other M70?

Packrat,

You know the only way to power a cheese burger is with, two all beef patties, special sauce, cheese, lettuce and a sesame seed bun.

I think I am going with the 50.5gr Varget load.

The new (to me) M70 has a longer freebore. I think the AMU must have been shooting some long VLD bullets and wanted to seat them way out.

Old & Slow
Based on what the 30-06 1000 yard benchrest shooters load; it sounds like LAR45 is in the hunt. For hunting I would not load into the lands; but for only accuracy; most benchrest shooters; whether 100, 1,000 , or anywhere in between load just into the lands. This means; powder workup must start well below max. Three Powders seem to be the main choice - RL22, IMR or H4831 or VIT165 - in that order. Bullets are in the 165 - 175 range. For pure accuracy the leading factory bullet loaded seems to be a Sierra Match with a few trying the new 168 Competition Nosler or 175 Hornady A max.

Wow, you guys have posted some outstanding loads that I'd love to try sometime. Here are few loads that I've found to be pretty good:

50 grains Varget with a 165 or 168-grain bullet. This is very commonly used and is "Garand-safe". It's a great stand-by load.

61.5 grains H4831 or 62 grains Reloder 22 with the above bullets. For deer hunting I use the Reloder 22 load with a 165-grain Ballistic Tip. It's accurate (3 shots in 1 inch at 200 metres) and devastating.

I've also had good luck with 60 grains H4831SC or 48.5 grains Varget with 180-grain Hornady Boattail Match HPs.

For 30.06s,this has worked great with a couple of rifles, enough 47N powder (about 49grs to 52grs,varies with lot and rifle) to drive a 165 hornady at 2600 and change. In the pressure curve there is quite a sweet spot.

Sierra 180 gr. ProHunter Spitzer seated 0.020" off the lands,
56.5 gr IMR 4350,
Rem. 9 1/2 primer,
Rem. case sized in RCBS X-die with shoulder pushed back 0.0015" from fired case dimensions,
no crimp,
average velocity at 10 feet is 2725 fps.

It's a compressed load if I pour the powder thorough a regular funnel, but I use a long drop tube funnel, and the powder just barely rattles when I shake the loaded round.
