Lapua 223R Cases

Lapua 223R Cases

I have a box of Lapua 223R cases where the packaging is marked with the calibre and the word "match". The cases are sticking in the shellholder of the Auto Prime and the press.

My son has a box marked with the calibre only not the word "match' (no problems).

Can anyone tell me if there is a difference or offer an explanation?

The "Match" brass should only differ in the internal capacity (& wall thickness).The Match brass is a higher capacity as Lapua were critisised for the very low capacity of their 223 brass. Using Varget, you would be hard pushed to get above 26.5 grains in.

That should be the only difference.

Steyrl,

The only cause for the sticking in the shellholder reason I can think of off the top of my head is that .223R is a rimmed carrtridge that doesn't exactly fit a "standard" shell holder manufactured by Lee (Auto Prime?)

Also perhaps the tolerances are so good that they won't accept the normal "slop" and therefore fit another (or the proper) shell holder.

Gerry, I think Steyrl used .223R as short for .223 Rem. I don't know of a ".223 Rimmed"...

Johnny Foreigner is right, the "match" brass is a fairly new addition to the Lapua line, intended to get the case capacity of .223 Rem cases up to par with other commercial case brands (like Winchester). There SHOULD be no difference in either rim diameter nor rim thickness. Sadly, that does not appear to be the case - or at least it seems the brass does not fit your shellholders...

Talk to the people who sold you the brass, or directly to Lapua, as smedley suggested above.

I did try to send an email to lapua from heir website but kept getting transmission error messages. Have sent email to Australian distributor; no reply as yet.

For sure I'll let you know.

Thanks Johnny Foreighner,

I'm using an ADI powder Benchmark 2 and yeah I noticed there ain't much room left in the case even tho I didn't load to maximum.

When using our ADI Mil 223Rem cases (5.56) about every 10th. one would be very tight in the Lee Hand Primer, and other brands press shell holder. Apparently it doesn't take much of a difference to bind them up.
Damn pity to have trouble with expensive brass though.

Your right is is a dam pity as I use Lapua in my 243W and have absolutely no problems.

Smedley,

Went to another computer and was successful in getting on to Lapua.

The reply, from Nammo Lapua R & D, is as follows......"The .223 Rem. Match is our current case type. Older type features no Match headstamp has slightly smaller capacity. The match case is made with very tight tolerances."

I have used Lapua .243W brass with great results and never a problem.

I thought I might do some comparison measurements with the diagam in the Hornady reloading manual; can't hurt!
