35 Whelen & Pistol bullets
Just wondering if anyone has developed a good load with .358 pistol bullets for the Whelen?

I have a load for 150gr speer using about 40grs of imr 3031 it was a very accurate load for targets. light recoil
I shot a deer with it once and it blew up on the sholder no penetration at all.

Using Speer 158gr jacketed bullets and lg rifle primer:

45gr IMR 4895, or

42gr Reloder 7

Do not reduce powder charge below those listed.
Both give ~2000fps in my 21.5" Rem 7600. RL7 a little more, 4895, a little less. These are plinking or varmint loads, not big game loads. Use accordingly.

from my notes:

quote:
35 Whelen 1909 Mauser 29"
a) 15 gr. Herter's 164 powder [Read Unique], 158 gr. XTP, 2.84", belled, chamfered, CCI200,
three holes touching every time with 4X Weaver at 40 yards
1425 fps

b) 55.8 gr. IMR4895, Sierra 2850 225 gr., 3.25" CCI200
2772 fps
Heavy gun with recoil pad made for the big push recoil

c) 10 gr. Herters 164 158 gr. LSWC
not so accurate as XTPs

I have used IMR's SR 4759 with 158 gr XTP HPs and 150 Speer FMJ. Have loaded from 20 to 24 grains of powder. Will group at about 1.5 inches at 100 yds. Have not measured the velocity.

One note of caution on using SR 4759 powder. You should weigh every powder charge. It bridges quite a bit in a powder measure and if you don't measure you WILL get light charges and heavy (probably over max) charges. When I use up this powder, I will try some Blue Dot to see how it does.
