Does anyone have a good load for a Marlin 1894CB with a 26" Oct. barrel for the 45-70??
I will be shooting 325 grain FNSP Cast bullet and a 300 Grain SJSP bullet. Thank you in advance for any input.

I like 50.0 gr IMR 3031 under a 300 gr flat point jacketed bullet.

Will drop deer efficiently.
Recoil quite manageable.

Look up and verify the load data to be sure my memory is still up and running and is safe in your gun.

Keep in mind that the 45-70 started out as a single shot cartridge and that many of the best loads will not fit in a Marlin except as a single shot.


Elmer Keith had a recommended load for the 1886 Win. that was 53 grains of 3031 and a 405 grain bullet. Accurate and plenty of power.

I like 30 grains of SR4759 with a 400 grain bullet

My favorite load is 25 grains of SR4759 with a 500 grain cast bullet. It is very accurate but it will not fit your rifle and the recoil is a little zippy in a light rifle.

You can't possibly have a Marlin 1894 in 45-70.
Maybe a 95....
What velocity do you want your bullets to go?; the net and manuals are full of loads for 45-70s.
In a Marlin 95, ( I have 3 of them) you can make them go from 1100 fps to 2000 fps and anything in between. Cast ones, slower; jacketed ones, faster. Look at loaddata.com and you will see all the loads on earth in there.

Marlin does make a 1894CB in 45-70. This is the second one I have owned. If you have current blue book they are listed in there.

Impossible; the 94 action is for pistol cartridges only.
Double check the markings on your rifle. If it has a flat bolt, it is not for 45-70; if it has a round one; it is.

It is that Irish Whiskey. If you drank good Kentucky Bourbon you'd never forget something so simple. Just like my Ruger #2 in 460/410....and that's right, I just looked!

I like Re 7 for my 45-70 loads, but my best advice is no matter the load, get a factory crimp die from Lee. I don't usually care for Lee products, but that die is a winner, your velocities will be much more consistant.

When I use smokeless in 45-70s,, I use 3031 for hot loads and 5744 for BP level velocities. I use a lot of Lee dies; they are great dies; nothing like some of their other products.

Me being a born and raised Kentucky boy I should drink Kentucky whiskey, but I have drank so much moonshine I am burned out on it.

I use 13.0-16.0 grains of Trail Boss with a cast of the same weight.
The speeds in my 22 in. rifle are 1325-1453 at 15ft.
They might sound funny but they hit hard.

I was born and raised in West Virginia and everyone there imbibes all manner of intoxicating beverages, both store bought and home made. I managed to limit my intake somewhat during my formative years, so have many of my brian sells left.
