Ackley Improved UserFavorite reloads for the 338 RUM
Of those who reload the 338 RUM what are your favorite reloads, especially with 225 and 250 grain bullets? Thanks ahead of time. Regards, AIU

Ackley Improved UserHard to believe nobody reloads the 338 RUM - ???

McCrayBoth mine lived on 91-93 grains of Reloader 25, depending on powder lot and what 250 grain bullet was used. A Federal Large Mag primer set things off.
Today, I'd want a more temp stable powder, so I'd try H-1000. It worked almost as good as Re-25 when I tested it.

98 gr RL25 is the max load as listed in the manual. These groups were around the 50 shot mark on a new barrel.
BULLET GR BC POWDER CHARGE
OAL COMPARATOR VELOCITY
TTSX 225 0.514 RL25 97.0 3.600 3.883 3068
TTSX 225 0.514 RL25 97.5 3.600 3.883 3110
TTSX 225 0.514 RL25 98.0 3.600 3.883 3150
TTSX 225 0.514 RL22 91.0 3.600 3.883 2995
TTSX 225 0.514 RL22 91.5 3.600 3.883 3030
TTSX 225 0.514 RL22 92.0 3.600 3.883 3030
RL22 did not give as good accuracy for me as the RL25. My problem with the max loads is that I lose my primer pockets. The reason is that my chamber is tight and does not have a long throat. I had the gunsmith make it that way.
I am now down to 94 gr RL25 and hitting 3075 fps and the pockets have been good.

Ed ScarboroI'm loading 94gr of RL25 with 225gr Swift A-Frames and Fed215M primers. I don't remember the velocity but it will shoot average groups of 1.25-1.5" at 200yds. I'm shooting a Remington 700BDL pretty much like it came out of the box.

Ackley Improved UserDear Ed, Woods, and McCray,
Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it. Woods those are very nice groups for 200 yds. The 338 RUM seems to have a reputation for being an accurate round, somewhat akin to the 308 and 300 WM.
How long are the barrels that you're using? Have you tried Retumbo or H870?
I note that the Nosler Manual says 98 grs of Re25 will generate 3227 with the 225 Accubond with a 26" barrel, but I'm concerned that the "pockets" may be toast after one or two firings. Any thoughts?

woodsMine is a 26" Brux barrel and my primer pockets were toast after those loads of RL25 and I only got the 3150 fps.
But really, I am just fine shooting a 225 gr bullet at 3050 fps or so. If that won't get it done then I don't need to do it!
Right now I am shooting the 225 gr Interbond and it is shooting pretty good. Don't have any pics because I am mostly taking singular shots at 300, 400 and 600 yards.
