It is a 2000-meter cartridge delivers a 420gr projectile supersonically with high kinetic energy, accurately to a target from a novel a platform called Intervention.

The .408 CheyTac cartridge is a true intermediate between the 7.62 NATO and the .50 Browning cartridges. The .408 CheyTac approaches several of the ballistic characteristic of the .50 Browning cartridge and in some cases, exceeds them. It has the advantage in being 33% lighter than the .50 Browning cartridge.

Specifications: cartridge cases are made by a small German firm that makes match quality cases. Some of their customers include: Blasser GmbH; Hartmann & Weiss GmbH; Holland & Holland Ltd; Krieghoff GmbH; Norma Precision AB; Westley Richards & Co W. R. Ammunition (German Special Forces ï¿½ sniper cartridges).

Projectiles are custom made by Lost River High Energy Technologies (Arco, ID). PRODAS 2000-designed solid nickel copper alloy projectiles are made by a Swiss-type CNC lathes. They are finally sized through pressure dies to bring the O.D. variation to less than 1/50th millionth. Projected ballistic coefficient at the muzzle is 0.906 and at 2000 yards is 0.665 (elapsed time = 3.26 sec)

A second solid projectile will be made with a driving band. Sierra is now designing a lead core match projectile.

Gentlemen when my mate and I have finished our current project we are looking to to a long ranger and have been considering the .338/.378 etc. This .408 chey tac is it a possibility to build and on what action can you build it that is commonly available. I f sierra are going to make bullets for it looks like it may become commercially available is this correct ?

As far as I know, at the moment there is no BR-quality action available for the .408.

Stiller's Precision Firearms, maker of the Viper series of custom actions, will make a .50BMG action soon. Jerry Stiller went to the BR boards and asked what people wanted in this action. A lot of people requested that he offer it with a .635" boltface. I think he's going to do just that. At around $1800 US, it will not be cheap, but as far as I know, it will be the only BR-quality CheyTac action out there. I've seen some big- game type actions that cost a lot more, so hey, maybe it's a bargain.

If you don't need BR quality, then any action that can handle the .505 Gibbs should work. If it's for long range, however, I think the animals deserve the best quality you can get. I figure that 'Roos with broken legs are bad PR in OZ.

I heard also about .375 and .416PGW, I belive bullets for these two are easy to get and performance is outstanding (it is based on the same cartridge). Why to need .408 if there is .416 ? I don't understand it . . .

You do not feel that if you put a "lot" of accuracy work into a cz 550 action you would get the accuracy for long distance shooting at all??

Can the public order brass, dies, projectiles easily?? How long until Sierra list the .408 match bullet??

How does the Chey tac compare to the .416 PGW as far as ballistics go.??
