greenjoyWhat the best way to create a lower velocity rifle load.
What the best way to create a lower velocity rifle load?
I would like to make up a load using a Speer 235gr bullet in my M70 375H&H Mag.
(I allready have a very fast load for this bullet)
I seems their is two methodes:
1) use a small amount of fast burning powder.
2) use a case full of very slow burning powder.
I worry that the fast burn route might shorten the barrel life by burning out the rifling at the leade.
Then I don't know if the slow burn route will create an inaccurate flame thrower.
What would be the pros and cons of either route?

wrongtargetOne way is to use Hodgdon's reduced load recipe which is 60% of the H4895 data for normal max loads. They list H4895 for the 235gr Speer.

craigsterFor reduced (lower velocity) loads in my 375 I use SR4759 powder and like you, the 235 Speers. 29grs works well in my rifle, accurate and comfortable to shoot. FPS is right around 1700. SR4759 is a faster powder, but I doubt seriously that your 375 will suffer from burnout, at least during your lifetime. Have fun.

JacobiteBest way is to ask Seafire for a Blue Dot load.

onefunzr2AA5744 is also a good reduced velocity powder. I use it in my 416 Rem with 365gr cast wheelweight boolets.
IMR4198 and dacron filler is squarely in reduced load territory, too.

N E 450 No2craigster's load is with in specs from the Speer loading book.
I have killed deer with the 235 gr bullet in my 375 H&H with two different loads, 60gr of IMR 3031, and 64gr of IMR 3031.
The 235 Speer bullet performed perfect with these 2 loads.
My brother has also killed a pig with it but I cannot remember which 3031 load he used.
The pig dropped to the shot.
If your 375 does not like this bullet try the 250 Sierra, I have a freind that has killed a few deer with that bullet and 64 gr of IMR 3031.
