Fireforming with a bullet
I love straight ammo. I just hate having to shoot the brass to get fireformed brass.

Does anyone on here use the fast powder and wheat or dacron? I am not sure I want that burnt crap in my barrel. But that would be cool if I could do it like that. You know a 300RUM only has a certain amount of life anyway.

I fireform a lot and have done so for over 40 years and have never used any filler except when experimenting. If you have some specifics you'd like ti discuss contact me. sofaroger

They say you can use dacron filler and 8gr-10gr of bullseye to fireform a bottleneck without a bullet. I have heard you can use wheat also.

Ken Howell has a procedure that uses Bullseye and a plug in the neck, made by sticking the case in a bar of soap. Just keep adding Bullseye until you get sharp shoulders.

A search here might bring it up, or perhaps a Google. No warrantee expressed or implied.... HTH, Dutch.

I use salt/free corn meal, with a small ball of toilet paper as a plug, but only when you have a handle on headspace.

Ken's formula wasn't that simplistic. His "formula" is not his, and he gives credit to George Nonte for the procedure.

-Pistol primers, not rifle
-Fill a case(inert primer) with Bullseye, scrape case mouth level
-Weigh the resulting charge and use 10% of THAT weight as a starting point.
-Use 1/4 piece of toilet paper to hold charge in place, tamp lightly with a dowel.
-Fill remainder of case with Cream of Wheat or Cornmeal(among other suggested fillers)
-You MAY if you so desire put a small wax plug in the case mouth to contain the charge and filler, it is NOT required.
-If you are unsatisfied with the results increase the case forming charge in 1/2 grain increments. Pay attention for signs of excess pressure such as flattened primers.

He further suggests that in his experience you will not achieve 100% forming with this method, but if the shoulder is adequately formed to facilitate headspace requirements, the first full charge with a bullet will do so. So it has been in my experience.

Some cartridge/chamber combinations preclude this method, ie. if a case will not headspace(non-Ackley design and rimless) do not use it. Conventional techniques for this circumstance require forming steps with dies and/or seating a bullet so that it engages the lands and thus fulfills headspace requirements. DO NOT USE THE CHARGE FORMULA ABOVE FOR FORMING CASES IN THIS MANNER!

By the time you went thru all the cereal, filler, non bullet crap clean up wouldn't it just be easier to buy some cheap bulk bullets. Load them up in light loads against the rifling and let 'em go.
Bulk .308 bullets at the gun shows are like 5-6 bucks /100.
I don't want soap, cereal, wheat, fabric of any kind, wax or other household product down the barrel of my gun just to save a buck.....which really isn't saving squat....if your time is worth anything.

Another good filler forgotten now is old typewriter carbon paper. Ackley himself told me about this in the early 70s. This, used with Bullseye will not hurt the barrel but is cheap and availableespecially if you have someone working in an office somewhere. I usually use the Bullseye/cheap bullet for my fireforming now that I don`t have access to the carbon paper..

For AI rounds I use bullets into the lands. I have fireformed cases of one caliber to another using pistol powder/dacron wad/cream of wheat/wax plug method & it works fine, just a bit messy for cleanup.

I am almost to the conclution, it maybe best to do it the old fashioned way of just shooting. I am not really doing it to save money but save my barrel of my 300RUM.

Hi: My method of fireforming has been to use 5-6
gr. of fast pistol powder, I normally use
W231...then fill the case with ordinary corn
meal, pack it tight with a pencil or something
that fits in the case neck, after packing,
fill some more & pack until corn meal packed
is about 1/16 inch from the top. Then put a
drop of ordinary cream colored wood glue over
it...make sure it seals to each side of the
neck...use a toothpick or somesuch to push
the glue around. Let set overnight...
the cornmeal will form out the brass to
the chamber& the cormeal & glue firing out
has no effect on the barrel whatsoever.
This works very well, but is time consuming
to do. Best Regards, Tom
