Hornady lists loads for 50, 52, 55, and 60 grain.

Here's the max listings for the 60 grain

IMR-4320 38.8 grains 3,700'/sec
IMR-4350 41.2 grains 3,700'/sec
Win-760 41.9 grains 3,700'/sec

Best find some 74 grain RWS bullets. My Steyr will not tolerate any bullet of less than 64 grains, and positively dotes on the RWS. The Vihtavouri load data seems to be good.

Very fast twist with 1/250 mm, light bullets apparently overstabilize or desintegrate: 5,6x57 R.

I had an interesting problem with one of these last week. The owner had the rifle custom built and from day one he could not get speed from it. 68/69g lead core bullets would blow the primers at 3200fps.

He sent me the rifle and I measured the headspace, chamber diameter at every dimension and disasembled a couple of loaded rounds to see what components were used. Everything pointed to a load that is way below even a start load. This is confirmed by the powder residue on the case necks and shoulders that indicate a slow seal.

I thought that the cases may be sized very short and that the case head slamming back into the bolt face may be causing the mischief so I cut open a case and found no trace of lengthwise expansion as would be seen in thinning of the case wall ahead of the base.

The evidence of pressure was clear. The primers were blown out and the ejector groove clearly stamped on the case head.

This pointed to the fact that the excessive pressure must be generated by some factor after the bullet has left the case. I measured the twist rate and that was OK. Then I had a look at the bore and groove dimensions.

The CIP spec for the caliber states a minimum bore diameter of 5.54mm and a groove diameter of 5.69mm. The tolerance is plus 0.020mm. The barrel measured out at 5.51mm and 5.58mm. This means that the barrel is under size for the bullets by 0.110mm (0.004") and the mystery is solved.

Once again the bottom line is that you cannot trust that the barrel on your rifle is what the manufacturer says it is, unless you have measured the bore diameter, groove diameter and twist yourself, or watched it being measured.

Howdy deer308, a Mauser 66 with spare barrels! I am in lust again. I've owned three M66s, and never had a spare barrel, those rifles never seemed to catch on in the USA. Good on you!!!!!
