Light loads for .458
About to start shooting a .458 W.Mag.
I thought I could use up some 2206, (suggested
max load of about 74gr) with a 405gr Rem proj.
This 2206 has a burn rate similar to 3031,Reloader 12, 748 etc.
So could I use say down to about 50grs with a tissue or cottonball on top?
These detonation storys worry me silly.
I did fire a .460 and 378 once and survived, but
I'd like to start off well under factory loads.

Note in particular the SR4759 loads. I don't think they require tamping with any filler either. Note also that the pressure max's out at a low velocity. Be careful re. overcharging. No data re. your lighter bullet, but it's probably available somewhere.
In my .270 w/ 110gr bullets, 29 grains of SR4759 leads to a .222 like recoil.

458RugerNo1I've found the load below to be pleasant and accurate in both my .458's
405gr Rem JFP
67.0gr IMR-4064
CCI200
W-W case
Crimp bullet in rear cannelure.
I get 1915fps in my M77 with this load... It's accurate and pleasant to shoot yet still has plenty of wallop for deer, hogs, elk, black bear.
JAL,
I started with the 350gr Hornady as my "light load", pushed at 2400fps by AR2207. Another option is the Rem 300gr you find in bulk packs or the Taipan 300gr. I'd use AR2207 personally and load as per a max charge in the 45/70. The "kabooms" with reduced loads are when using slow burners and AR2206 is nowhere in that league. I'd also stay away from the fillers etc... too many bad stories. I think you'll also be amazed at how effective your "reduced" load is on game if you decide to try them.
Cheers...

cgbachI have used 75-4895 with a Remingotn 405 gr in my Ruger #1. It runs about 2170 fps and shoots very well. A light load but recois is still stiff.

Thanks everyone, and I'll sure be using it on pigs. I was making do with a .223 (mainly for
Dingos but someone poisoned them). And my old
30-30 can't shoot so good with my old eyes.
Lucky this S/hand M70 has a little Pecar on it.
