416 Rigby powders for light bullets?

416 Rigby powders for light bullets?
I know most people use H4831 sc for the Rigby for the 400's, has anyone used different powders for lighter bullets? Is 4831 still the propellant of choice for the big case? Thanks "D"

I use IMR4350 w/ Barnes 300 X's. I think 4350 (either IMR or Accurate) will give better performance than 4831 with bullets up to 350 gr.

My experience with the 416 Rigby has been positive with H4831SC w/ 400 grain bullets and IMR4350 with 350 grain bullets - most were very accurate - KMule

I like 98 grains of RL-22 for my 370 grain North Forks through my Rigby. Try it you might like it. Good shooting.

Ricci That is some reloading webpage! Lots of info. It would be handy to have velocities as different barrels give sightly different milage. More info there though than I can imagine. I have IMR 4350, H4831 and re 22. I will start with these 3 and see what I get with some 325 North forks. Thanks "D"

That is exactly why I don't list velocities adn pressures! Every firearm will have different results, plus velocities and pressures will also vary depending on the weather conditions and your geographical location.

Steve I am sure there are good reasons for liability sake that you feel that way. I do not have a m43 to test pressure. Using a chronometer I can judge pretty close on my pressure if I have known safe velocities and all other variables are the same. Again, dang nice website. Good hunting. "D"

I don't load for 416 Rigby.
However I do load for 375H&H and I usually use H4831 and IMR4350, or whatever else is lying around.
Hodgdon just recently dropped H870 and now have RETUMBO.
It is supposed to be just a little faster than H870.
Accurate also has a 'new' slow magnum powder that they call MAGPRO.
Haven't used either of them myself, but my customers say they are pretty good.
Might wanna give them a try.
I have them in stock 1 and 8 pounders.

I really don't feel the need to push 350's as fast as 2900 fps ... which sounds more like a 416 Weatherby Mag load than a 416 Rigby load. You can probably do this ... but I'll bet you're beyond the original Rigby design working pressures.

I do push 350 gr Mag Tips and 350 gr Barnes Xs with 98.0 gr of IMR 4350 on Norma cases with FED 215 primers. The Barnes Xs chrono at 2687 fps. Given the good BC of the bullet this yields a trajectory a little better than a 338 Win Mag and delivers huge energy to the target!

Pretty comfortable to shoot too. ;>Wink

I am looking at 325 gr bullets at 2900-3000 fps. It may not be doable but that is why I am asking. "D"
