houser52.41 Magnum Cast Loads?
I have some Montana Bullet Works hard cast 240 grain WFNGC bullets on the way and am looking for a good hunting load for my .41 magnum. I already have a load worked up for the 210 gr. Gold Dot that I will try out on deer too.
Hodgdon load data does not list a load for a 240 gr. cast bullet. The powders I have are H110 and Lil Gun.
Can some of you guys help?
Thanks

larrysHodgdon does have loads for the 245 grain WFNGC. I would use them for the 240. I use 18 grains of H110 with great results. Without the gas check, I have gone to 20 grains just fine, but you need to back off some with the GC. I could never get Blue Dot to be nearly as accurate.

jstevenssecond on the Blue Dot. It works with cast medium wt. .41 loads.

tiggertateI use a lot of Blue Dot for 223 and 357 but I noticed that Alliant has put up a warning not to use Blue Dot for any loads in the 41 Magnum. Anyone know what that's about? They are fine with it in the 357 or 44 Mags but not the 41?
blue dot has been reformulated and gets very peaky in some cases that were fine before the 41 is definately at the top of the list.
2400 h-4227 or h-110 or aa-1680 would be my choices for high vel in magnum handguns.
for more medium velocities i would choose unique or herco or even 800-x or the steel powder put out by alliant.

larrysThat was my problem with Blue Dot. I could feel the velocity/recoil differences shot-to-shot. Since I load these one at a time, I did not suspect the loads. I did not chrono them, but just felt BD was not for me.
As Lamar also said, I have had good luck with mid-range loads and 800-X as well.

houser52Thanks for all the replies.
I'm going to test some of the loads listed for the 245 grain cast bullets. Lil Gun seems to do better with the 210 grain Gold Dots than H110. It has less muzzle flash and cleaner burning too. I still have to chrono the loads to compare the velocities though. I normally go for the most accurate load first and velocity second.
I used Blue Dot many years ago but use Hodgdon powder the most now for all my rifle and pistol loads.
