I have some 168 gr matchkings laying around. I was going to load them in my '06 Does anyone have a load for them with RL- 22 Thanks

Reloader 22 is too slow burning for 30'06 loadet with 168g bullet, especially in normal lenght barrel 22" or 24".
In every case, take a look on Nosler manual, and use Magnum primer.

I have had good luck with IMR4350, 58 Gr., F210, Winchester cases, 2900 fps with the 168 MK.

R-22 works very, very well for 180 and 200 grain bullets in the 30_06.

RL22 is a great powder for the '06, but I'm with the guys above who suggest 4350 (of some sort) with the 168 grs. IMR4350 was also my choice, worked well.

Load 20 rounds and try it. My experience with RLs 19 & 22 have convinced me that they sometimes "trade places." This happened to me when experimenting with 7m/m Rem mag and 160s.

As I understand it today, the RL powders are much more refined then they were a few years ago and no longer suffer from such sever lot to lot variations. In the FWIW department, I've loaded a bunch of Berger's 185 grain LTBs over N-160 in 30-06 and have been extremely happy with the results. Old man Singer himself couldn't put the yotes back together that this combination has dispatched.

I am a user of lots of RL 22. It might work out prety well with your 168s but I would agree with the 4350 thery and RL-19 being more likly to give you what you want.
I tried the RL=22 with 180s 165s and 150s.
And it was decnet With all 3 weights.
I would never let barrel length influance my powder choice.
another powder to try is H-414...tj3006

I switched to RL22 in my 30-06 this year, with 165 grain Nosler BT's. I wish I would have switched years ago. I added 150 fps to my rifle. Check the Nosler website for some load data with RL 22. Tom.

R22is way to slow, its a great powder for the 180 @200 gn proj , drop down to R19 and you will get far better performance

Hope you get some suggested RL-22 loads for those 168 gr. bullets. My suggestion would be to definately try it.

I agree 100% that RL-22 isn't what the manuals show as optimal for velocity with your proposed bullet weight but IMO every barrel is a law unto itself.

I had a similar expereince with H-4350 & H-4831 in two .30/06 Sprg.'s. All the manuals said H-4350 was the prefered choice for velocity over H-4831 but the slower powder not only provided fantastic accuracy but in one barrel a 175 fps increase in speed with 165 grain bullets over H-4350 and that with apparently less pressure.

If you don't know just shut up.

Now that out of the way....

RL22 works FINE with 165's in the 30-06, though SOME rifles don't like it.

In my rifle I seat Noslers to close seat the lands and a charge that is over the listed max of 63.0grs (105% of case capacity) in the Nosler 5th edition manual.

IT IS an outstanding performer.
I have yet to find a load with a 150gr bullet
in that particular rifle that gets within 40fps without showing pressure signs.

"Manuals" don't show it as being best but both the 5th edition and 6th edition show the highest velocity with it.

It's a complete crapshoot if your rifle will have best accuracy with it, mine doesn't...
the "better" accuracy loads with IMR4350 only shoot 1/4" tighter, but ~150fps SLOWER.

For me it's an easy choice.

My OTHER 30-06 belches sooty flames like a dragon with an upset stomach on RL22 and fouls the bore with 6-7 shots THAT rifle clearly prefers IMR4064 and that's all I load in it.

YMMV (Your Mileage May Vary), but don't decide based on books or "theories", decide on the results with YOUR rifle.

Worst case is you are out $40 for 1lb of propellant and a box of bullets.

and Gee! you already have the bullets....

So your downside is what? $20 for propellant and $1 for half a tray of primers?
