Good day gents,

I need to buy a powder measure for dispensing ball powder for loading some of my smaller caliber cartidges, 223, fireball, 222. Is buying a Harrell the be all and end all? Or is it a waste of dough if your just loading to shoot gophers?

I use the RCBS uniflow measure for all my reloading. Works wonders with ball type powder...is a bit more finicky with extruded. I found when weighing extruded powders, if I set the charge at 0.5 - one grain low, I can use my powder trickler to bring the charge up to what is needed. Still profoundly faster than the old spoon method I used to use!

I use a uniflow with a micrometer stem.

I have no problem throwing charges to exact weight with ANY powder. From 3.4 grs of ww231 to 80grs if Lincoln log imr5010

in my opinion actually weighing individual charges is a complete waste of time. There's so many other variables that will have a much larger bearing on accuracy than 1/2 of 1% variance in charge weight

I love my Harrell. Once I got it, I sold all my other measures. With a little work you can create a repeatable measure tbale for a whole variety of powders

It's well made, and is repeatable.
I have one and am satisfied with it. There was a lot of thought that went into Harrell's measure, and as a result, it mounts easily and works well. All powder measures have problems with long stick powder such as 4831 and 4350, so you'll have to work around that problem as we all do.
But, on ball powder, it throws perfect drops every time. The beauty of all of the measures using a Culver insert is repeatability. I just record the setting on the Culver in my notes, and come back to it when I need it and the drop is dead on.

A Lyman, Redding, Hornady or RCBS will do about as well as any for ball powders. It measures about as well as water so that's no great trick.

The virtue of the Harrell is its Culver-design metering assembly. It's valued by those who do load development at the range.

I would look to the Redding and Hornady products for comparable performance.

Hi, I have the Harrell's Bench Rest measure and it is a very acurate and repeatable measure, The Harral brothers will let you try one for 2 weeks, but i must say you will want to purchase it.i have for sale a Redding 3BR Match powder measure and a RCBS Powder measure with 2 machined drums for large and small cal. with a RCBS Micrometer adjustment chamber 0-120 gr. I don't think you gain anything by spending a lot of money. My $20 Lee will dispense H335 accurately. This is America, so buy what you want. I remember that Joe at Realguns did a comparison of popular dispensers - might be worth a read before you plop down your dinero.

I use the good old Lee Dippers and the RCBS 505 scale...which was made by Olhaus...or something like that...that is where I had to ship it to get it recalibrated some years ago...

If your going to load at the range buy a Harrell. If your going to do your reloading at home buy halo68's 3BR. I use both for ball powders and a good old uniflow for the coarse stuff. The only difference I can find in accuracy between the Harrell and the Redding is the users technique.
