Too Much Expander Drag
When I FL resize 280 AI cases drags so much that I feel that I am going to pull the case through the shell holder. I clean the necks inside with a brush in a drill and lube inside with imperial wax. My fired case necks mike .318. After FL sized with the button, they mike .388. Sizing without the button. necks are .302. The button mikes .284. I am using Rem. cases and Redding dies. What is my problem?

.388 after resize??? that dosn't sound even remotly right- I'd of thought more like .314. Typo? Of course if it really is .388- I think you found your problem Smiler

John, right it was a typo - after cases are run through the FL sizer with the button the necks measure .308.

I find that I need to clean the expander button every now and again. After I clean it, I lightly lube it with Imperial Wax

SmilerI had to take an expander button out and polish it with fine emery cloth then 00 steel wool one time. It drug even with wax or anything. A good polishing stopped all the dragging. Funny thing but plain old RCBS sizing oil put into the insid eof the neck with a Q tip worked best.

I roll an old bronze brush on my lube pad of simular diameter and for a handle I use an
old primer pocket cleaner handle (rcbs)
It makes a world of differance on the upstroke!!

give it a try thumb

chuck it in a drill and polish it down a few .001"s. Now if it is only yielding .003" nk tension or less, then you just need some lube and cleaner necks maybe.

If you can get carbide buttons, that will help a lot. Hornady makes them for RCBS dies & Redding makes them for their dies.
