40 S&W Hornady Lead SWC Loads
I just picked up a box of 250 lead 180s for my XD. I have never loaded lead, and could not find any data on this bullet. Hornady doesnt even list it on their site. Anyone out there have any experience?

Two of my sons of 40S&W XD's and both of them have had problems with some of the reloaded ammunition that they have tried to use. I have shot some of the ammo that they have tried to use in their XD's successfully in both of my Sigs 40 S&W.

I don't know if that was due to the dimensions of their chambers or a challenge for XD's. It would be interesting to see if any of the lads out there have loaded successfully for their XD's and if they ended up doing anything differently.

I shoot lead bullets almost exclusively in all my handguns including some 40s. Use starting loads for 180gr jacketd, taper crimp & you should be fine.

the only problem with reloads I have seen were with some reloads a fellow range patron made a while back that the primers werent seated deep enough. Second strike fired everytime, in my XD and his glock.

These failures in my son's guns were a failure of the slide to come back into battery after a shot. I would think that indicates a sizing problem; either of insufficient resizing or a smaller dimensioned chamber or a length problem. A review of the primers in the unfired rounds indicated that the primers were seated properly. Still a question in my mind???????????

yea I see your point, probably sizing issue I agree. I have never had this problem with my reloads or a friends USP with my loads. What brand dies do you use?

No, probably not taper crimping or not crimping enough. For some reason many pistol shooters think they can skip this final step, but it's important for reliable ammo. I've never seen a sizing die fail to bring a case down to a useful dimension. Always crimp your pistol ammo, always.

I loaded 100 rounds last night, and when I finish I usually remove the barrel from the pistol and drop each round into the chamber to check them. I had 2 rounds that apparently failed to get sized as the first half would go but not the base. I disassembled the round, sized the case with the decap pin removed and reloaded, worked fine.

I agree with your point about crimping the pistol rounds but yet the questions lingers, why would they not go into battery with the XD but the exact same shell would go into battery with two different Sigs?? One was a P226 and the other a P2340!!!!!!!!!!!!
