Ackley Improved UserReloading the .338-06 Ackley Improved. Turning that '06 action into a magnum.
Dear all, I just wanted to give you the latest update on my data for the 338-06 AI. REMEMBER these loads must be approached from below and used in MODERN FIRST-RATE bolt-action rifles that are very well made and trustworthy! This caliber is a very efficient. The barrel is Bartline and I'm getting subMOA accuracy. If you want to make a magnum out of your standard '06 action, this is how you can do it and still get spectacular long-range performance.
Norma 204 Powder; 225 gr. Accubond (BC=0.55)
26" barrel custom made HVA action
Oehler 35 triple screen chronograph
56g. -2547 fps
58 -2661
60 -2734
61 -2784
61.5 –2824 Oehler
62 -2820,2854, 2850 (Federal Cases)
62 -2863 (Norma cases) Still 54oF
62 -2897 (FCs) smooth bolt action
62 –2844 Fed Brass
62 –2827 Norma Brass(54oF)
62 -2871 Nosler brass (54oF)
62.5 -2901, Nosler brass, smooth bolt action
62.5 –2866,2871,2844 Norma brass
62.5 –2846 (54oF), 2888,2878 (82oF)
63 -2885 Pockets getting loose too early with Nosler brass, but useable
63.0 –2885 Oehler Norma Brass Pockets OK Very accurate(82oF)
63.5 –2895 Oehler Norma Brass Pockets OK Very accurate(82oF)
I'm not going to take it over 2900 fps with a 26" barrel and I wouldn't take it over 2840 fps with a 24" barrrel.
Regards, AIU
