Forming 7mm SAUM from 300 WSM
Hey guys,

I have seen a couple of posts on the internet where this can be done, despite the slightly fatter WSM case.

Does anyone know if you can buy a proper case forming die to do this, or can you run a 300WSM case through a 7mm SAUM FL die with the decapping rod removed.

I have tried to contact CH4D to ask them, without any luck.

7mm SAUM brass is difficult and expensive to obtain, where 300 WSM brass is much cheaper and alot more plentiful.

I am building a short actioned ultralight hunting rifle in either 7mm WSM or 7mm SAUM on a short actioned M700. I like the 7mm SAUM because it will function better through the action, but give me the ballistics I am looking for (160gr Accubond at 3000 fps in a 24 inch barrel)

Regards,

Michael.

My question is more directed to the rear

.004 more

the base and rim of the WSM is .004 in dia bigger and this area is solid and stout

the rim id is .005 bigger

how will you reform these areas

Kiwi, dare I ask, why go with the SAUM when the WSM is around? Brass would be more directly available and in many cases you can find actual 7mm WSM brass…

Just lube it properly and run it through the 7 SAUM die, then trim. If you're nervous about getting one stuck in the die, then simply leave out the decapper/expander to make it easier to remove a stuck case and do the expanding in a second step. The two cases are so close in dimension that it would make no sense to have an intermediate forming die.

Various drawings of the two cartridges show various dimensions, but they are designed to have identical heads. A .005" variation, even if there were one, won't make any difference as your sizing die won't touch the head, anyway.

Sticking with the 7mm WSM. My Wyatts extended mag box turned up and it turns out that i don't sacrifice too much space in the case with the bullets I intend to use.

Cheers for the advice though,

Michael.

I have some 300 SAUM that I necked down to 7 mm SAUM. If you do not care about head stamps, I can make you a deal on them.
