Rich AndersonI just bought a rifle in this calibre and hope to get to the range this weekend to try out a few loads. I got some ideas from the people here when I inquired about the 358. You may want to look in the archives as I asked about it in Sept.

<Don Martin29>For years I loaded 46 gr of IMR 3031 and the 200 gr bullet.
The 180 gr Speer is really good for whitetails also and IMR 4198 is what to use then.

Arild IversenFriends...
Perhaps this should be on the gunsmith thread, but I have a couple of questions for you 358 win. users.
I have a Rem.#7 in 243 win. wich see wery little use. I had a talk with my local smith, an he recomended to rebarrel it to 358 win. He also said to go for a 20" barrel. I plan to use the gun for roe and red deer hunting. Shooting ranges can be in exess of 200 meters, seldom over 250 meters.
What shall I do ?
Is the 358 win a + 200 meter caliber, and should I go for a longer barrel, say 22 or 24 ". And what is the optimal bullet weight considering both trajectory and downrange punch ?
I have been looking for a 35 Whelen for a while, but this might be a good alternative.
Or is there a significant difference in trajectory and energy between the two ?
Best regards Arild

Paul BArild.Check out (
www.sixgunner.com/paco/358-wcf.htm) and (
www.sixgunner.com/paco/358part2.htm). I think that article, in two parts will give you lots of answers as to what can be done with the .358 Win. That does not necessarily mean that I recommend his loads, as they are way over what is recommended. However, I find the prospects of what he's done very interesting. Mr. Kelly is one very knowledgeable individual, so he may very well be right.
I don't think a 24 inch barrel would be necessary due to the large expansion ration of a 35 caliber bore. My .358 is a Ruger 77, old style with the tang safety, and it has a 22 inch barrel.
I have no idea of why the more potent 35 caliber rifles have not been more popular here in the U.S., but in my not too humble opinion, American shooters are missing out on a good thing.

NickuduArild,
The 20" barrel will suffice but I would go for a 22" barrel if possible. In my Browning BLR, my 225 Nosler Partition load drops only 11" at 300 yards. It is very definitely a strong medium range cartridge. I did a piece on the .358 Winchester for the newly released Barnes Reloading Manual.

Thanks for the inputs fellas.
As always, this No 1 site is the place to go regardless what one is pondering about.
I guess I go for a 22" barrel. That would make my # 7 a real dandy for red deer and roe deer. And I got plenty of time to get it on the track for the next fall.

<Mike Dettorre>I have found w748 to be very good...
max laod is 55 grns for 200 grn bullet
I prefer the 225 grn which has a max of 53 grns.
I would not hesitate to shoot anything in NA with a 358 inside of 250 yds with the 225 or 250 grn bullet.
