Accuracy With And Without A Silencer
Results with a 22 rim fire

Finally managed to settle on a 223 rifle to test its accuracy with and without a silencer.

A Tikka T 3X.

I have gathered all the different factory ammo I have, and will try reloads too.

Tried a few military ammo of unknown make, had to give up on them, as the groups were running into several inches!

Still, got a few more which might be more reliable.

And to see if the weight of the bullets mean anything, I will reload bullets from 35 grains up.

Stainless heavy barrel in synthetic stock.

Barrel is 20 inches long.

The rifle with and without the silencer.

Also found that using the silencer, the barrel, and the silencer, get very hot.

I made an adapter that fits on the scuba tanks we use for our air rifles, and put it through the chamber to blow cold air through the barrel to speed up the cooling.

Helps a lot.

Not much in it.

21 better with silencer.

20 better without.

Left target, black, without silencer.

Right target, red, with silencer.

I have tried to arrange the ones better without first, from best to worst.

Then the ones with silencer again from best to worst.

The difference is not much.

The results with the 22 rim fire showed better results with a silencer.

I will try the same test on a 308 Win.

In fact, I have some targets shot before with it for this test, but have more ammo to shoot.

Once I am done I will post the results.

This rifle has a factory made silencer.

The 308 has a silencer we have made here.

One thing that I noticed is that the silencer loads seem to have a distinct point of impact change.

They all hit lower on the target. Did you happen to chronograph the loads?

The velocity numbers are at the top of every picture.

Suppressors are known to change point of impact.

The velocity is for no silencer.

I did not bother taking velocities with a silencer on.

Point of impact change was relatively little with this rifle.

Much worse with the 308 I remember,

I will measure some loads with and without for the 308 and see what the differences are.

Point of impact chnage is really expected as one adds weight to the end of the barrel.

Velocity reduction with a silencer are very small.

8-12 fps only.

Change in pint of impact due to the additional weight added to the end of the barrel.
