Reloading the 470 NE
I am ready to reload for my new 470 NE. The book "Shooting the British Double" Talks of using a filler or packing foam when using 87gr of Rel 15. At the same time it does mention that Federal Factory loads do not use a filler. I am interested in any comments anyone may have on the subject.

I am planning on using Bell Brass, Federal 215 primers, 87gr of Rel 15, 500 Woodleigh Soft Points. Information on any other loads will be appreciated..

Thanks

I would also suggest IMR 4831. 105 grains will duplicate the factory loads (2150 fps). This powder fills the case much more than the RL15.

I use 88 grains of RL-15, F215M primers and a 3/8" styrofoam wad over the powder. The wad weighs about half a grain. Velocity from my Searcy is 2155 fps with 500 grain bullets. The reason Federal doesn't use any filler is because they use a special primer that they don't sell as a component.

JBoutfishn,
That special primer is the Federal 216, which we can't get.

I will be trying your recipe too, next week in Kentucky.

I will start with 85 grains of RL-15 and work up until I hit 2125 to 2150 fps with 500 grain Woodleigh softs and solids and GS Custom FN's. I will use the packing foam filler.

Having thoroughly digested Graeme Wright's book, I will stay away from all other powders and stick to the Reloder 15 with filler.

I think the Federal factory loads with no filler and the hotter F-216 primer suffer from erratic velocities. Your loads with filler and the F-215 primer should be better.
