olarmyRe: Favorite powder for 30-06 with 165 gr
THE LOAD for a 30/06 per John Barnsness is any 165gr bullet with 57-58gr of H or IMR 4350

fredj338Imr4831, RL19 & H4350 work well. I load for my son's 06. I like 90%+ density & all 3 powders will give that w/ good vel.

elkhntrI am going to try and work up some 165 gr hunting loads for my Rem 700 '06. Do you have a favorite powder for this load? If you have chronographed velocities please include them.
I have R22 and IMR 4831 on hand, but these powders are pretty slow for the '06. I'm thinking of IMR 4064 or 4350. Any comments or suggestions?

elkhntrIs there an easy way to calc load density without buying the powder and trying it out?

fredj338Nosler's lates manual shows loading density. You should be able to reach 2850fps w/either of those powders under a 165grNP.

Brad58.5-59.0 gr's H4350/WLR/RP/2,850-2,880 fps.
I use 57 grains of IMR 4350 with 165 grain Nosler Partitions, 165 grain Hornady SSTs and 165 grain Hornady Interbonds. I use CCI 200 primers with an OAL of 3.340". The chronographed Muzzle Velocities are 2814 for the Partitions, 2878 fps for the SSTs and 2891 fps for the Interbonds. The interbonds will be replacing the Partitions for my hunting load since they are a bit more accurate than the Partitions.

C1PNRFor the last 10 to 12 years I've been using 58 grains IMR 4831 with 165 grain Speer SPBT in WW brass with WLR primers. About 2,750 fps and holds about 3/4" in my 1970 (or so) Model 70 Winchester (with Leupold 2.5 - 8 Scope).
About 52.5 grains WW 760 in RP cases (all other the same) works pretty well too.
I love the 165 grain weight in '06 for all around use. I usually use 180 in my 300 WM for Elk, but still trust the 165 '06 to do the job if that's what's in my hands.

Yes...IMR4064 and IMR4350 both may work better for what you have on hand. I have a couple of 165 loads: Scirocco and Sierra HPBT, the latter is an older load that was decent but velocity was great, 2754 on top of IMR4350.

<allen day>I agree. The Barsness 165 gr. .30-06 with either IMR 4350 or H4350 (especially H4350 SC) is really tough to beat.

2ndtimerI had very good results with Reloder 22 and the 165 gr Nosler Solid Base in the Model 70 Lightweight Carbine that I used to own. It got almost 2800 fps out of its' short 20" barrel with 63 gr of Reloder 22. Good accuracy, too. You could at least give it a try. I remember it worked well with 180 gr bullets as well.
