<oldgringo>Need 5.7MMJ (Johnson) data/info.
Does anyone out there have any experience with the 5.7 MMJ cartridge? I would like to know how it performs. Any info. would be appreciated. I am thinking of chambering a semi-auto handgun for it. The dies are listed at Huntington Die Specialties. Where would you suggest I get a chambering reamer? The brass is supposed to be .30 carbine ran through the 5.7 sizer die to make the neck. Thanks to all. O.G.

<ralphbeagle>I have a Rem 700 ADL chambered in 5.7 Johnson. I have never chrono-ed it, but it shoots best with 13.5 grains of 4227 behind a 45 Gr Remington Hornet bullet (.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards out of a 22" Shilen barrel). Reamers are tough to come by unless you want to have one made. I think I rented the one my 'smith used from somebody out in Wyoming who responded to a post similar to yours. Just looked and cannot find his email. Try doing a search on "5.7 johnson reamer' and '22 spitfire reamer' here and on Shooters. I have run across several people on the net who have rifles chamberd in this caliber, but have never heard of anyone using it in a pistol.

<landtrain>Here is the e-mail address of a fellow in CA that has built a 5.7mm Carbine and corresponds with Col. Mel Johnson's son.

I think he can give you a loty of technical data as well as trial and error engineering.
Never heard of a 700 in 5.7mm Would like to see one on the range.
Good luck.

<oldgringo>Thanks to both of you. When ever I get it done, I,ll post results. I am using an AMT Auto Mag III in .30 carbine to start out. It should be fairly easy. O.G.

<ralphbeagle>JGS Tools (
www.jgstools.com) lists reamers (listed as the 22/30 carbine). I don't know if they rent sell or what. Good luck.
