Hornady 55 soft point in 223 - loads
I just got some bulk 55 soft points and have some h4895, varget, and h335 to try. Anybody have any pet loads with these powders?

I looked at hodgdon website and the h4895 and varget look pretty good. I use varget in my 69 SMK load, but never really thought about using it for 55 gr pills. It lists 27.5 as max load which is a lot of varget to get in the case. Planning on using WSR primers, lake city brass, loaded to mag length in my savage.

I would try the 335 first. I have better luck with 335 on lighter bullets and better luck with Varget behind heavier bullets. Never used 4895 but a lot of 223 shooters get very good accuracy out of it.

I've used IMR4895 from 55 grain to Sierra's 80 grainer, and I've been happy. I won't dis Varget, it's just that I haven't gotten around to trying it. I buy IMR4895 in large quantities and use it in all my military surplus guns, so I guess it's my "go to" powder of choice.

H335 is the powder for 55 grain .223 offerings.

Thanks. I was hoping that h335 would work b/c I have quite a bit on hand and it meters nicely.

That load sounds a little on the hot side. Hodgdon lists 25.3 as the max for h335

Hornady manual says 23.2 as a Max. In two of my rifles, I didn't see any pressure indications until I got over 27 but my best loads were between 25 and 26.

Guns vary. Start low (21-22) and work up.

H335 shows some promise with these bulk bullets. Most loads under .750, good enough for a pdog.

26.5 WC846, which loads like H-335, 55gn. Speer, CCI-400.
These give excellent results in my hvy bbl. bench rifle, And function flawlessly through the M-16 and AR-15's.
